Zermatt has picked up one of this year’s Blick Winter Awards: on Thursday 2 March the results of an online vote by the Blick Group were celebrated at its award ceremony. Six awards went to the best Swiss winter sports areas, split into the categories “Snowboard & skiing”, “Cross country skiing”, “Small and sweet”, “Leisure and fun”, “Family” and “Gastronomy”. Zermatt took the top prize in the latter award, which was presented for the first time this year. Zermatt was also successful in the “Skiing and snowboarding” category, achieving second place. Blick awarded Zermatt CHF 85,000 for its first place in “Gastronomy”, which can be used for advertising purposes across its channels.

The Fuchs bakery in Zermatt is known for its innovative spirit. A new collaboration with the packaging company Pawi now allows customers to design their own packaging for certain products. From orders above 25 pieces, customers can design the packaging for their favourite product online, such as for the bakery’s famous "Matterhörnli" miniature Matterhorn chocolate specialities. The personalised presents will make ideal customer gifts.
In addition, the bakery has revised its range of cakes and now also sells its own drinks. Bäckerei Fuchs has also developed in terms of sustainability: by joining the Swisstainable programme run by Switzerland Tourism, it is contributing to a sustainable future.

In the new fine dining Restaurant Potato on Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt, this vegetable is used in the majority of the dishes. There is also a focus on local sourcing, with most ingredients coming from within a maximum 50 km radius around Zermatt. At lunchtime, guests can select dishes from the à la carte menu while in the evening, they can choose between three, five or seven courses as part of a surprise menu. This is changed twice a week. Even in the current situation, you can try out the new restaurant’s creations, thanks to online ordering and their home delivery service.

Under the direction of Armand Aufdenblatten and Martina Eha, the rex hotel is introducing two new culinary concepts. The new Restaurant Bergreich is opening its own bakery next to it, where they will bake 100% organic bread. Their house speciality is sourdough bread and is available to order online now. Orders for fresh bread placed in the evening can be collected the next morning between 8:00 hrs and 12:00 hrs at the window of the “Backzeit” bakery.

The CERVO Mountain Resort has put together some new and innovative winter packages. Fans of Swiss cheese, in a group of maximum four people, can enjoy a chat over some fondue in the old Stockhorn gondola. Anyone missing the atmosphere of a Christmas market this year should visit the Santa House. Private groups of up to ten people can rent the mini Christmas market and purchase handmade products, make s’mores over the fire or rummage through the picnic basket provided.

The Manud café is a recent exciting addition to the Zermatt village centre, where friends meet for lunch, coffee and cake, a snack or evening drinks. This winter, there’s a fantastic new item on the menu – from 11 December 2020 to 11 April 2021, up-and-coming Zurich chef Noah Rechsteiner and his team will be introducing his “ANOAH” concept to the Manud, inviting guests to a plant-based dinner, available Tuesday to Saturday evenings. The young chef is well-known for taking his guests on a journey into the world of plant-based cuisine, but it’s not all about the ideology; the focus is on sharing hospitality and creative cuisine.

Hotel Mama Zermatt has taken over the former bar Gee’s and the former Cuckoo Club at Bahnhofstrasse 70 in Zermatt. The Indian owners, the Singh family, studied in Switzerland and already run successful restaurants in Wengen and Grindelwald. Bäckerei Fuchs, run by owner Philipp Fuchs, is launching a new bread delivery service for guests in holiday apartments. Guests can order bread online to be delivered to their apartment the next day using the postal service. Both one-off orders and weekly subscriptions will be available. The “Bread Post” is a project set up by local bakeries and the Swiss postal service.

After minor renovations, the Europa Trail Hut is scheduled to re-open in the middle of June 2020 under the new name “Täschalp Restaurant & Lodge” and under the new management of Gela and André Lerjen, who run Othmar’s Ski Hut in winter. Initially only the renovated restaurant will be open, welcoming hikers on the Europa trail and the Monte Rosa Tour with Valais cuisine. The lodge remains closed while renovation and redesign work takes place.

Restaurant Moos, which has been closed for five years, is scheduled to re-open to guests in June 2020 under the new name of “Moos-Hitta”. Owners Sabina and Roger Perren will offer homemade soups and cakes and much more. During the off-peak season, the Hotel Rex changed its name to “the rex”. A new concept has also been launched, plus renovations have been carried out on the lobby, lounge bar and bedrooms. On 6 December 2019, “the rex” will present their new lounge bar. The design is based on their new concept – being an open house for both locals and visitors. “The rex” is partnering with ONA – a company that develops new gastronomy concepts – and will open a pop-up restaurant in the hotel, aimed at offering young chefs the opportunity to showcase their skill. There will also be glass walls in “the rex” offering fantastic views of the chefs as they prepare delicious meals on a fire pit right outside the restaurant.

This winter, the Zermatt Matterhorn Brauerei will open its new event and tasting room, where guests can try a wide variety of beers from around the world. These include speciality beers made in-house - the popular classics, ‘Matterhorn’ and ‘Monte Rosa’ as well as seasonal specialities. A range of beer-themed events will make the new tasting room a great place to socialise. Opening times are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 16:00 to 22:00 hrs.

A new restaurant, ‘apas TAPAS’, will open its doors in Hotel Sonne on 30 November 2019. The menu will feature ‘Tapas around the world', including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Thai tapas. The restaurant will be ideal for anyone looking to try something new. It will seat approximately 40 people and will be open daily between 18:00 and 21:30 hrs until 26 April 2020.

In autumn 2019, the Parkhotel Beau Site will be extensively renovating and updating its reception area, lobby, bar and restaurants. From the end of November 2019, guests will be able to experience the new look and three new concepts: the highlight of the Grill Restaurant will be the delicious cuts of meat from the wood fire grill, and a selection of fish, seafood and vegetables will also be available; the Gornergratsaal will feature a renovated restaurant area with a buffet and show kitchen, serving breakfast in the morning and different buffets in the evening including meat, fish and vegetarian delicacies and the third concept will be a new ‘shop-in-shop’ vinothek with expertly chosen wines that you can taste or buy in store.

In December 2019 the "Zer Mama Bistro", which will welcome hungry and thirsty guests from 07:00 to 22:00, will open on the ground floor of the new Hotel Mama. The Zer Mama Bistro offers “glocal food”, in other words global specialities from local produce. A generous brunch will be available in the morning, coffee and snacks will be on the menu throughout the day, and dinner will be served in the evening. The sun terrace is a pleasant after-ski locale, for après-ski without the hullabaloo.

Cervo Zermatt has been running the Stazione pop-up bakery at Zermatt railway station since June 2019. It sells bread, sandwiches and baked goods. Stazione is being altered in spring 2020 and will reopen for the coming summer season with a new concept.

The restaurant Ferdinand in the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort is now open in summer too, from Thursday to Saturday from mid-July to mid-August, in the garden next to the Cervo Puro terrace – known as Ferdinand Garden. The Ferdinand is also open for events. Four movie nights are planned on the Ferdinand Terrace in July and August. A new Raclette Evening is also being launched on Tuesdays at Cervo Puro from the end of June until mid July and from mid August until mid October – with only raclette on the menu!

Zermatt has never had as many Michelin stars as it does in 2019; the Matterhorn village now has five stars, two more than last year. The Omnia and the Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni have both been awarded one star. The After Seven retained its two stars and the Ristorante Capri still has one star.

As of 30 April 2019, Bäckerei Pius Fuchs AG will take over the production and some of the staff of Bäckerei Biner, which is closing as a new manager could not be found. However, customers won't need to go without their favourite Biner products, as the Fuchs range will be expanded to include some Bäckerei Biner specialities. The acquisition benefits both parties; Bäckerei Biner couldn't find a new manager and Bäckerei Fuchs was looking for a larger bakehouse.

From 1 May 2019, JuMa Gastro will take over Elsie’s Bar. There will be some small aesthetic changes and a new menu. Elsie’s Bar will now be a wine and champagne bar with speciality fin-ger food such as oysters. The theme of the bar will remain the Belle Époque. It will re-open on 1 June.

The new L’Atelier Grandsire restaurant opened in December 2018. Guests have been enjoying lunchtime and evening meals in a cosy French atmosphere. The restaurant also offers home-made patisseries and a wine store on the lower-ground floor. Janine Tschümperlin and Yannik Robert Jacques Grandsire are the people behind this new res-taurant. Grandsire previously worked as a patissier in Hotel Mirabeau and is originally from France. His partner is Swiss and they run the restaurant together.

The Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort is opening a pop-up bakery in mid-June, near Zermatt railway station in the former Biner bakery store. Alongside fresh bread, it will also sell pastries and home-made sandwiches, plus a selection of Cervo souvenirs. Guests can also check in to the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort in the pop-up bakery. The store will be renovated in autumn and a new concept launched for the 2019/2020 winter season.

The Gault Millau chef de cuisine Heinz Rufibach is now in charge of the fine dining Restaurant Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni in the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Regular guests and locals have a very good culinary memory of Rufibach. The Bern native was already chef de cuisine in the Zermatterhof from 1996 to 2002.
