Together with Swiss yoga teacher Adeline Fossard, the SchlossHotel in Zermatt has developed two new yoga retreats. The weekend or weekly packages include accommodation and other services, with two daily yoga sessions in small groups of up to 10 people. The sessions take place in the hotel's new yoga facility or in the open air, against the backdrop of the Zermatt mountain panorama – with the opportunity to have your picture taken by photographer Fred Vaudroz. The programme also features group hikes and dinners, with additional options on the one-week programme for workshops on improving basic yoga postures or creating an individual training session.
Following a roof fire in May 2020, the Hotel Derby on Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt was demolished, including the restaurant, and completely re-built. The attractive main building has been constructed in a traditional Valais style. The Hotel Derby will welcome guests to its new rooms from the end of May, when they can enjoy the pine cladding and comfortable divan beds.
The pandemic has forced many people to work from home. Why not have a work space in the mountains? In Zermatt, several accommodation providers are now offering work packages – comprising a well-equipped, motivating work space and an exciting, relaxing range of leisure activities to help your work-life balance.
In spring 2021, the three-star Hotel Hemizeus is renovating 11 double rooms in the main Zeus building. Rooms will be redesigned in an Alpine style, with underfloor heating, larger bathrooms and new furniture and lighting. The work will be completed over May and June, with the hotel re-opening scheduled for July. The hotel owners will also be adding a terrace to the restaurant with lounge seating and tables where guests can enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. This can also be used in winter. All the rooms and apartments in the other buildings, Hera and Mira, have been renovated over the last few years. The facades of all three buildings have also been renovated. Next year, the remaining ten bedrooms in the Zeus building are scheduled to be renovated, completing the hotel’s refurbishment work.
Hotel Bella Vista is building a relaxation room clad in Swiss pine wood in the “Alpine Spa Bella Vista”. This wood's essential oils have a wonderful aroma and have proven health benefits. The room will feature water beds where guests can relax. Two of the bedrooms will also be renovated, from a traditional style into a chalet style, as has already been done with some of the other bedrooms.
The Silvana Mountain Hotel is redesigning its outdoor area for the forthcoming summer season. In addition to the lounge area, there’ll be a children’s play area with a climbing wall, swings, treehouse, waterwheel and table tennis, plus a marmot observation post. Around 15 marmots live within 20 metres of the hotel. There will still be a bike chalet for guests where they can charge, wash and repair their e-bikes. The hotel also has e-mountain bikes and kickbikes for hire. The redesign of the outdoor area is the last stage in the full renovation of the hotel with new bedrooms, a new spa and a new restaurant.
Under the direction of Armand Aufdenblatten and Martina Eha, the rex hotel is introducing two new culinary concepts. The new Restaurant Bergreich is opening its own bakery next to it, where they will bake 100% organic bread. Their house speciality is sourdough bread and is available to order online now. Orders for fresh bread placed in the evening can be collected the next morning between 8:00 hrs and 12:00 hrs at the window of the “Backzeit” bakery.

The CERVO Mountain Resort has put together some new and innovative winter packages. Fans of Swiss cheese, in a group of maximum four people, can enjoy a chat over some fondue in the old Stockhorn gondola. Anyone missing the atmosphere of a Christmas market this year should visit the Santa House. Private groups of up to ten people can rent the mini Christmas market and purchase handmade products, make s’mores over the fire or rummage through the picnic basket provided.
At the World Ski Awards 2020, the luxury holiday apartment Chalet Zermatt Peak won first prize in the category for world's best ski chalet. The award has gone to Zermatt for the last three years, but to Chalet Les Anges. The World Ski Awards were created in 2013 and is the sister organisation of World Travel Awards. Every year, a jury made up of industry experts and the public choose the winners in a range of categories.
The Ari Resort in Zermatt now has a new wellness area. From December 2020, guests will be able to enjoy a state-of-the-art jacuzzi, a Finnish sauna and a relaxation zone. Constructed from pale spruce wood and with gentle lighting, the atmosphere is perfect for calming, private relaxation.
For the fourth time in a row, the 5-star Zermatt hotel The Omnia has been named “Switzerland's Leading Boutique Hotel” at the World Travel Awards 2020. The annual World Travel Awards are famous travel and tourism awards around the world. Travel, tourism and business experts vote to decide the ranking.
Working with Trustyou, the specialist travel magazine Connoisseur Circle has named the best Swiss hotels in 11 categories, including 4 Zermatt organisations.Details

Over the last few years, Hotel Capricorn has renovated all the bedrooms in the main building. Since spring, guests have been enjoying freshly painted rooms with new wooden walls, parquet flooring and new furniture. Some of the bathrooms have also been renovated, with the rest to be renovated gradually over time.
«Ski Chalet» is the new restaurant addition at the Silvana Mountain Hotel, which will open its doors on 27 November 2020. All the hotel rooms are currently being refurbished in an Alpine style as part of the renovation.Details

While the “SchlossCottage”, due to open this July, is being refurbished and the new “SchlossHouse” is being built on the land next to the hotel, the existing wellness area in the SchlossHotel Zermatt is also being extended. The new spa concept includes the use of the cannabis ingredient cannabidiol (CBD).Details
To celebrate the building's 20th anniversary, the Kin Hut is being fitted with eco-friendly, sustainable solar panels. The hut is scheduled to open for the summer season on 26 June 2020.
In July 2020, Schlosshotel Zermatt is expected to open their new “SchlossCottage” in the centre of Zermatt. Two former barns have been converted into a cosy cottage, sleeping up to four people. It has three floors and features a fireplace, sauna and home cinema. Guests will also be able to use the wellness areas in the Schlosshotel Zermatt and access the hotel’s services.
The “Apparthotel Casa Vanessa” is now called “22 SUMMITS Apartments” and will be renovated in summer 2020. The apartments will all get a brand new look, from the exteriors to the bathrooms. They will have an Alpine-chic design, similar to the 22 SUMMITS Boutique Hotel.
At the end of January 2021, BaseCamp Hotel & Apartments will open their new “Camp One” chalet in Furi, sleeping 6-7 people. It is right next to the pistes and will be let out as a single accommodation unit – a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Zermatt village. The chalet will offer an outdoor jacuzzi and will have its own wine cellar and a fireplace. Services such as organising breakfast and shopping will also be available.
On 20 April 2020, construction will start on the land next to the hotel, building the “SchlossHouse” and an extension to the existing spa and gym at the Schlosshotel Zermatt. The work is scheduled to be finished by the middle of October 2020. There will then be four Superior rooms and two suites in the Schlosshouse as well as a new sauna and steam rooms, relaxation facilities, beauty treatments, spa packages and a new state-of-the-art gym for guests to enjoy.
This year's UBS Prix Sommet in Valais is focusing on sustainability. Over nine months, the three participating companies will work on improving their waste management, reducing their CO2 emissions and optimising their processes. Tradition Julen Zermatt is one of the three companies who will face this challenge.Details
This week, the Parkhotel Beau Site in Zermatt re-opened its new gastronomy world after being closed for six weeks for renovation. Last weekend, General Manager Roman Codina and the Board of Directors welcomed around 300 partners, guests and friends to the hotel’s refurbished facilities.Details
During the off-peak season, the Hotel Rex changed its name to “the rex”. A new concept has also been launched, plus renovations have been carried out on the lobby, lounge bar and bedrooms. On 6 December 2019, “the rex” will present their new lounge bar. The design is based on their new concept – being an open house for both locals and visitors. “The rex” is partnering with ONA – a company that develops new gastronomy concepts – and will open a pop-up restaurant in the hotel, aimed at offering young chefs the opportunity to showcase their skill. There will also be glass walls in “the rex” offering fantastic views of the chefs as they prepare delicious meals on a fire pit right outside the restaurant.
In November, a new Igloo Village will be created in Zermatt at Rotenboden with a restaurant, outdoor bar, overnight accommodations, Whirlpool and the best view of the Matterhorn. This year, it will be exotic: ice artists will create a snow palace featuring animals of the underwater world out of snow and ice.Details
Hotel National has been undergoing refurbishments since the end of September and will re-open on 6 December 2019 with a new wellness area, new bedrooms and a new roof. The 360-square metre wellness and spa area will have a new swimming pool, fitness centre, children’s pool, new treatment rooms and a new wellness zone. The whole of the fourth floor is also being completely renovated, with all the suites, family rooms and double rooms on this floor getting a brand new look.
The Hotel Carina has a sparkling new look for the 2019/2020 winter season. It will be a chic, reasonably-priced hotel with a warm atmosphere and high-quality materials, offering a choice of rooms from doubles to dormitories. There will be no reception or concierge, instead the hotel concept invites guests to participate, including self check-in and self check-out as well as an honesty bar where guests can make their own drinks. The small but dedicated team is never far away and are always happy to help.
In autumn 2019, the Parkhotel Beau Site will be extensively renovating and updating its reception area, lobby, bar and restaurants. From the end of November 2019, guests will be able to experience the new look and three new concepts: the highlight of the Grill Restaurant will be the delicious cuts of meat from the wood fire grill, and a selection of fish, seafood and vegetables will also be available; the Gornergratsaal will feature a renovated restaurant area with a buffet and show kitchen, serving breakfast in the morning and different buffets in the evening including meat, fish and vegetarian delicacies and the third concept will be a new ‘shop-in-shop’ vinothek with expertly chosen wines that you can taste or buy in store.
During October and November 2019, the Hotel Alex will be refurbishing the Alex Lounge Bar, the breakfast room and the wellness centre. The Alex Lounge Bar and reception area will be completely renovated, including laying of new floors, new bar furniture and remodelling of the walls. The breakfast room will be furnished with new upholstered chairs, leather armchairs and settees. In the wellness area. Hotel Alex is renovating the saunas, quiet areas, steam baths and multi-sensory showers. The range of wellness services comprises: massages and beauty treatments, Finnish sauna for men and women, with separate quiet areas, steam baths and multi-sensory showers, a modern exercise studio, a squash court and an indoor tennis court, as well as Zermatt’s first swimming pool with a family jacuzzi.
Hotel Antares in Zermatt will be managed by the Hamburg hotel group Bikini Island & Mountain Hotels. Renovations and extension work are planned for 2020.Details
The Hotel Admiral is currently being transformed into the Hotel Mama Zermatt, incorporating 29 new rooms, which will open in December 2019. Exactly like the Hotel Admiral, the new hotel has a co-working space, managed by PuraWorka. The "Zer Mama Bistro", which will welcome the new Hotel Mama’s guests on the ground floor, will also open in December.
On 1 December 2019, the Hotel Elite, which was constructed in 1962, will reopen after comprehensive renovations to the rooms, restaurant, reception, wellness area and garden terrace. Local materials have been used as much as possible during the work. The 3-star hotel’s five floors have been renamed with the names of stops on the Gornergrat Bahn because the hotel’s founder previously worked for the railway.
In December 2019, a new hotel will be opening its doors at Spissstrasse 44 in Zermatt, to be known as "Naco Aparthotel, by Arca". It will offer a rooftop suite, two junior rooftop suites, eight two-room apartments and 17 studios. The aparthotel is owned by the Hotel and Solebad Arca, which is immediately adjacent. Guests can also use the Hotel und Solebad Arca’s spa, with saline spa, sauna and steam bath. This spa area will be expanded by the start of the winter.
In summer 2020 the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort will alter the main building and build an additional chalet below the present chalet five. This means Cervo will remain closed throughout summer 2020. The Ferdinand Pop-up Hotel will open, however, so that visitors can still spend their summer holidays in Cervo.
The Silvana Mountain Hotel will be refurbishing its spa area between September and December 2019. In addition to the existing spa pool, three different saunas, multi-sensory showers, two relaxation rooms, a lounge and a massage room are being developed in several little chalets on a 200-square-metre site. It is all being constructed with natural stone tiles and mature wood, to create an Alpine atmosphere. Following the refurbishment, the hotel will be able to claim proudly to be the closest spa to the Matterhorn. The Silvana Mountain Spa will be accessible to the public, by request, from 5 December 2019.
The friendly Hotel Bella Vista in Zermatt is renovating 5 of its 21 bedrooms. These include a suite, which will be given a whole new look, two double rooms and a single room. Walls will be moved, existing windows enlarged and new windows and bathrooms installed. The work is scheduled to be completed in time for summer 2019.
Tradition Julen has new apartments and studios available to rent. The “Downtown” apartment, which sleeps four to seven people, is available to book now. Located at Getwingstrasse 12 in the heart of Zermatt, it has accommodation on three floors, all with lift access. The balcony offers views of the Matterhorn. Free use of the spa facilities in the Romantik Hotel Julen and Hotel Alpenhof is included in the price. Breakfast, half board and daily cleaning options can also be added on request.
From 30 June 2019, the Hotel Hemizeus will be renovating one of their apartments and several of the bedrooms. Out of the 32 rooms, 8 will undergo a complete redesign, and two bedrooms will be combined to create a suite. Out of the 9 apartments, 1 will be renovated, plus a new bathroom will be fitted.
The Silvana Mountain Spa in the Silvana Mountain Hotel is being extended in time for the 2019/2020 winter season. The plan includes the creation of an Alpine sauna landscape with lounge (pine sauna, herbal steam room, Swiss chalet / vitarium), a multi-sensory shower and a massage facility. The spa is open to non-residents.
In time for the season opening on 28 June 2019, the Kinhütte has announced a wide range of new packages. These include guided Kin Glacier hikes where you can see wild Alpine goats, voluntary work such as chopping wood, drying crockery and baking cakes, yoga and a relaxation programme with a massage. At 2,584 metres above sea level and surrounded by four-thousanders in the Mischabel group, the hut prioritises sustainability and takes waste reduction, food recycling and the use of local products very seriously. Eating together round a table provides companionship and sociable conversation for sole travellers.
Hotel Admiral will remain open until 30 April 2019. After that, it will be fully renovated both inside and out. The hotel will re-open for the 2019/2020 winter season under the new name of Hotel Mama, with 29 rooms (four more than before). It will continue to be a three-star superior hotel and will be managed by JuMA Ho-tel AG. Hotel Mama will also have a co-working space managed together with PuraWorka.
The continuation of the SAC Monte Rosa Hut has been secured. The Rubin family had to stop managing the hut for health reasons, but Richard Lehner (Zermatt mountain guide) and Kilian Emmenegger (Zermatt ski instructor) have been confirmed as the new managers. They both bring a wealth of experience with them, as they used to manage the Gandegghütte. They will start their new role in summer 2019.
Roman Codina is the new director of the Parkhotel Beau Site. Originally from Schaffhausen, he has many years of hotel management experience from working in a wide range of hotels. Codina replaces Franz Schwegler-Dossetto, who has been the director of Beau Site for 24 years. A series of building renovations, refurbishments and alterations were carried out under his leadership. He is now retiring.
Daniel F. Lauber from the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort is the new President of the Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association. He succeeds Corinne Julen from Europe Hotel & Spa and the focus of his year in office will be the topic of sustainability.Details
