“Zooom the Matterhorn” – multi-million franc project on the Gornergrat

A new multimedia experience all about the Matterhorn and the incredible views of the 29 surrounding four-thousanders is coming to the Gornergrat. In summer 2021, the first visitors will be able to enjoy a multi-dimensional immersion and get up close to this beautiful natural world. The exhibition will be in the station of the former “Hohtälli” cable car.

Visitors will be able to get close to the Matterhorn in three zoom levels. The first level offers the choice between two virtual paragliding flights – a relaxed, panoramic flight and an exciting, fast-paced flight. The virtual flights, experienced through 3D glasses and swaying seats, focus on the Matterhorn and the incredible Alpine landscape.

The second level takes visitors on a journey through the diverse seasons on the Matterhorn, from frozen, snowy landscapes to wild autumn storms through to abundant spring meadows and balmy summer evenings. Light projections from three sides and a highly detailed reproduction of the Matterhorn provide visitors with an incredibly realistic virtual experience that they can actively move through.

In the third level, the focus is on the real Matterhorn and the surrounding Alpine landscape in all its majesty and beauty. Periscopes allow visitors to get up incredibly close. Anchor points in visitors’ field of view provide additional information about each topic.

The multimedia presentation is rounded off with comprehensive, fascinating information on key historical events, the Alpine natural world – flora, fauna and glaciers – and the history of the Gornergrat Bahn. Construction of this magical experience started in spring, with doors scheduled to open to visitors in summer 2021.

The exhibition will be a fascinating addition to any visit to the Gornergrat, offering a whole new perspective of the incredible Alpine world that can be experienced up close. The project is estimated to cost almost nine million Swiss francs and is a key part of developing the visitor experience to the mountain. At the end of 2019, the Gornergrat Bahn placed an order with Stadler for 5 new double-unit trains for 45 million Swiss francs.
