Library Zermatt

The library in the centre of Zermatt is located in a beautiful old building constructed in 1730. Guests and locals are warmly welcome. They find exciting and entertaining literature and DVDs about Zermatt along with popular fiction and children’s books.

The small and homelike cosy rooms in this protected building previously served as a residence for priests. Since 1991, the library has had its home here across from the Matterhorn Museum. It is a lending library where books and other media are available for adults, youngsters and children. The collection is currently around 5,500 items. The variety of media is continuously reworked and renewed.

Bookworms find novels, thrillers, biographies about famous people and much more. Children and youngsters also will find books and other media suitable for their age group. There are also books about the first ascent of the Matterhorn and about people from Zermatt on the shelves in the second floor of the house: For example, about the legendary mountain guide Ulrich Inderbinen (1900-2004). Visitors will also find the works in the library by around 15 local authors, who have interesting things to tell about Zermatt and the surroundings, its mountain world and the people who live here.

One entire room is dedicated to Alpinism. This is managed and supported by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) of Zermatt.
Locals and guests from around the world also find a small selection of documentary films about special features of the village of Zermatt. This media provides in depth insight into the history, culture, everyday life and the special features of Zermatt. These DVDs cast light on unknown events and places with fascinating unusual views of the mountain world.

Silvia Burgener, who works in the library, said, “Everyone finds something on our shelves that appeals to him or her. Even people who do not think that they are booklovers.” Her colleague Karin Biner added, “Our library is also a gathering place.” Everyone, who takes a moment to look in, will be convinced by the local atmosphere of the wooden building.
