The replanting of degraded areas at high altitude is extremely difficult. It is imperative at many locations, however, in order to protect against erosion and to reduce the damage to the landscape. Conspicuous gaps in the vegetation and areas threatened by erosion are replanted by means of sowing - and, in particularly sensitive areas - by the planting of seedlings. Seeds from Valais are collected together and reproduced, with some of this being carried out locally by specialists. The mixtures are adapted according to the exact vegetation recorded at each site.
The ideal type of replanting for inclined, exposed high-altituded locations is tested under specialist management on a trial area at Aroleid.
