With its three ridges and its pyramid-like shape, the Weisshorn (4,506 m a.s.l.) fascinates people from far and wide. The 19th August is the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Weisshorn by the Briton John Tyndall. Many mountain guides and alpinists are making their way to the mountain for this anniversary.

This is something for real gourmets. From the start of August 2011, there will be mini-Matterhorns (Matterhörnli) to eat, in the form of filled pasta. They will be served as an exclusive dish in a lot of  restaurants in Zermatt.

The old Monte Rosa cabin of the SAC was blown up by the Swiss army on the 14th July 2011. A moving chapter of SAC mountain cabin history now belongs to the past.

Zermatt Matterhorn, Zermatt’s Facebook page, already has more than 4478 fans. In light of this occasion, Facebook fans are called to participate in the Matterhorn photo contest. The prize is an unforgettable stay in Zermatt, including a helicopter sightseeing flight around the Matterhorn for two persons.

“Planet Earth – Cosmic Oasis” is the name of a new film depicting the creation of the cosmos, the earth and life that can be seen in the Orbitarium of the Technorama in Winterthur. Shown in large format from the Gornergrat platform, the Matterhorn plays a leading role at the very beginning of the film.

The advance sales for the seventh edition of the Zermatt Festival have now been opened. A discount of ten percent is available on on-line concert tickets up to the 30th June, and the full programme can be found on the homepage, as well as in printed form on the counter of Zermatt Tourism from the middle of July.

The Dossen Glacier Garden in Zermatt has an attraction more since June 2011. Thanks to the newly constructed hanging bridge spanning the Gornera Gorge, the walk to the Glacier Garden from the Furi aerial cableway station will now take less than 30 minutes.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s touring exhibition on the new Monte Rosa Hut is stopping off in Zermatt. From 16 June to 14 August 2011, detailed information on this complex timber building will be on display at various locations in Zermatt, including on the Gornergrat.
