Swatch Skiers Cup 2013: Zermatt to host the world’s best freeriders
It’s the highlight of the year for friends of freeriding and freestyling. In early February the world’s top 16 skiers will be gathering in Zermatt for a week to compete in the Swatch Skiers Cup 2013.
This top event is being held from 10 to 15 February 2013 on Zermatt’s high-altitude snow areas – away from the main pistes of course. “Captain America” is the charismatic Cody Townsend of the US while “Captain Europe” is Kaj Zackrisson from Sweden. These 16 elite athletes are set to compete in two teams, Europe vs. USA, as they show off their spectacular ski skills.
Spectators can travel up to Furgg via Schwarzsee on the Matterhorn Express. There, close to the Garten ski run and the Käsestube Restaurant, they can watch the stars of the freerider scene as they get down the mountains in easy flowing turns and spectacular jumps, away from the prepared piste. Other contests are to be held at the Aeschihorn and possibly also the Alphubeljoch.
Tip: The contest is staged subject to weather and snow conditions. If on the day there’s nothing doing at Furgg, spectators can watch the skiing aces train at the Gravity Park instead.
Autographs: On Wednesday, 13.2. and Friday 15.2., at 5 pm in the bar Vernissage of the hotel Backstage.
