Zermatt Bergbahnen AG: award for environmental scheme

18.09.2013

Zermatt Bergbahnen AG’s environmental efforts are bearing fruit: The company has received the 2013 Revegetation Award for its renaturation scheme, which mitigates the environmental impact of piste construction. Not only is Zermatt car-free, even its piste construction is carried out in harmony with nature.

“Zermatt Bergbahnen AG has proven its exemplary commitment to sustainable tourism”, states the press release on the award ceremony. For years, Zermatt Bergbahnen AG has made a systematic effort to prevent ski pistes from turning into a desert wasteland in summer. “They should be a feast for the eyes all year round”, said the CEO of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG during a recent Swiss television programme presented by the ‘10 vor 10’ info magazine.

Exemplary revegetation scheme
Since 1996, the high altitude revegetation task force (AGHB - Arbeitsgruppe Hochlagenbegrünung) of the Verein für Ingenieurbiologie (Swiss Bioengineering Association) has been working for the environmentally-friendly and site-specific renaturation of the Alpine region. The Revegetation Award is presented every two years. In its press release, the Association emphasizes that Zermatt has combined several successful measures: “The revegetation scheme implemented by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG re-uses local sod and sows native high-altitude plant seeds. All environmental activities in the skiing region are judged on the basis of an environmental impact assessment that has been developed over the last ten years”, says the press release.

Experts from Zermatt Bergbahnen AG and specialists from environmental committees met on-site to discuss sustainable approaches to piste construction.
