At the beginning of January 2014, the Swatch Skiers Cup will attract top freeriders to Zermatt for the second time. Team Americas and Team Europe will have new captains. Spectators will once again have an opportunity to get close to the action. The line-up promises an exciting competition.
Plenty of snow and cool temperatures have made it possible: As of Saturday, 30 November, the Zermatt ski region will offer 85 kilometres of pistes in the Matterhorn glacier paradise, on the Rothorn and on the Gornergrat. Around 85 kilometres of ski fun can be had on the Italian side.
Did you know that the Glacier Express also runs in winter, offering a spectacular train ride through the Alps? As of 15 December 2013, there will be one train a day from St. Moritz to Zermatt and back. The perfect Christmas present.
For the second consecutive time, Zermatt has been voted most sustainable winter destination in Switzerland. The ‘Verkehrsclub der Schweiz’ (VCS), the Swiss Cycling Club, presented Zermatt with the “Mobil & ökologisch” award (mobile and ecologic) for a number of reasons, chief among them the Matterhorn village’s convenient accessibility by public transport.
The Zermatt sportsmen Martin Anthamatten (29) and Elia Zurbriggen (23) have received Upper Valais Sport Awards 2013. The winner was Ski alpinist Martin Anthamatten while ski racer Elia Zurbriggen won third place. Victoria Kreuzer, Martin Anthamatten’s partner, also received a Sport Award.

Zermatt is the Swiss gourmet village par excellence. Three new restaurants in Zermatt have been awarded a star and been included in the 2014 issue of the Guide Michelin Switzerland, the popular restaurant guide.
Zermatt frequently wins quality awards, the most recent one being the “Best Luxury Chalet Award 2014”, presented by Condé Nast Johansens Awards to the chalet operator Elysian Collection. In addition, the “World Ski Awards” have nominated the “Chalet Zermatt Peak” as best ski chalet in Switzerland.
Zermatt Unplugged, the somewhat different music festival, will present three very special events during the Christmas week: The Bach Collegium Zürich will perform “A Venetian Christmas”. James Walsh and Marlon Roudette will play concerts at the Vernissage.
