Dom Hut: Offical re-opening on 7 July 2013
The Dom Hut serves as the main starting point for climbs up the seven surrounding 4,000m peaks. The hut, after extensive refurbishment and conversion, will re-open its doors on 7 July 2013.
Located at an altitude of 2,940 m, the Dom Hut is set against a spectacular alpine mountain backdrop. The surrounding scenery features the Weisshorn peak (4,506 m), which almost looks as if it was at eye level, and the Matterhorn (4,478 m) with its imposing northern face. In order to reach the hut, hikers set out from Randa. On the way, they must negotiate some difficult terrain which involves the use of ladders and fixed ropes (T4). This hike is therefore unsuitable for those who are not sure-footed or have a fear of heights
Hut with all mod cons
The Dom Hut, which is under the ownership of the Uto Section of the Swiss Alpine Club, was adapted to meet modern standards during a one-year construction period. The newly converted hut now features a spacious dining-room with seating for 75 guests, dormitories (duvets provided) and a generously proportioned entrance area. Washing and toilet facilities have been integrated into the building and a shower area is provided. Food is offered at the hut courtesy of its hosts, Kathleen and Renato Schaller. Renato also serves as a mountain guide and rescuer.
The Dom Hut is the ideal starting point for climbs to the surrounding peaks, which are among Switzerland’s most majestic: Dom (4,545 m), Dürrenhorn (4,035 m), Hohberghorn (4,219 m), Lenzspitze (4,294 m), Nadelhorn (4,327 m), Stecknadelhorn (4,241 m) and Täschhorn (4,490 m).
