With its three ridges and its pyramid-like shape, the Weisshorn (4,506 m a.s.l.) fascinates people from far and wide. The 19th August is the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Weisshorn by the Briton John Tyndall. Many mountain guides and alpinists are making their way to the mountain for this anniversary.
Around 10 radio and print journalists and camera crews will climb the pyramid, and will be joined by mountain guides from Randa. They all want to honour the mountain. The mayor of Randa, Leo Jörger, has been on the mountain many times: “The Weisshorn has shaped the community of Randa, from the first ascent to today”, he said on the occasion of the celebration of the 150th anniversary on the 24th June in Randa.
Three anniversaries The mountain will be experiencing as many as three anniversaries this year: 150 years since the first ascent, 111 years of the Weisshorn Cabin of the SAC Basle, and 45 seasons of the cabin warden Luzius Kuster.
