Zermatt has 126 hotels, and the hotel scene is world famous. The latest ratings of the SonntagsZeitung (Zurich Sunday newspaper) once again underline the class of Zermatt: Eleven of the 50 best winter hotels are in Zermatt.
Zermatt has long been a favourite destination for fans of well-run and innovatively designed hotels. The Sonntagszeitung, which is based in Zurich and covers a large part of Swiss Central Plateau, published this year’s hotel rankings on the 4th December 2011. The three rankings cover the 25 best in the five-, four- and three-star hotel categories. And, once again, Zermatt scored well here.
All the three Zermatt five-star operations were ranked in the first 25: The Riffelalp Resort in fifth place, the Mont Cervin Palace at Place 13 and the Zermatterhof at Place 18.
Eight Zermatt hotels are included in the Top 25 four-star hotels. Third place: Hotel The Omnia, to which a complete article was also dedicated. Thanks to new management, the hotel was able to present good figures, and a cult status is prophesied for the hotel in the future. The Hotel Alex took the eighth place, with the Alpenhof as 12th, Cervo at 13, the Mirabeau Alpine Residence at 15, Matthiol at 19, Romantik Hotel Julen at 22 and the Hotel Post at 24. In the category of the three-star hotels the Hotel Bella Vista was the only hotel, which reached a position under the 25 best winter hotels and recorded place 14.
Strict criteria The author Karl Wild, a recognized expert on the Swiss tourism and hotel scene, looked at the following criteria, among others for his ranking: evaluation of the major hotel and restaurant guides, quality controls by leading hotel associations, investments made, hospitality, charisma and the innovative spirit of the hotelier, price-performance ration and the overall subjective impression.
