Ski–In to the 2010/11 winter season
This winter it’s time to head south! The Italian side of this international ski region is showcasing itself as more exciting than ever. And on the Swiss side, two restaurants offer guests an enormous increase in quality. Let’s go exploring!
News from our neighbours: Cervinia has been upgraded
Two new pistes and Slow Ski
Two new black runs will attract snow-sport fans to Cervinia, where the towering south face of the Matterhorn looks directly down on skiers and snowboarders. On the first run, experienced skiers and boarders can test their technical skills on the first “Vertical Ski Passage”. The second run is the former piste No. 24, a little less loaded with adrenalin - but only just. This season the run has been totally, re-routed, lengthened and widened.
And what’s more, a new interpretation of ski sport is evolving beneath the Matterhorn: Slow Ski. This means taking your time, breathing nice and easy to the slow rhythm of time, switching off and marvelling at this unique panorama. Slow Ski is skiing with soul, relaxing and revitalizing.
Acrobatic Village – acrobatics for skiers and snowboarders
In Plan Maison, almost a kilometre-long section is dedicated to border cross and ski cross: both of these relatively new disciplines have found their ideal terrain in Breuil-Cervinia. In fact so ideal that the Italian national team for border and ski cross has chosen the Acrobatic Village as its training location!
New playground at Plan Maison
This season, Plan Maison, where lifts and pistes meet in the shape of a star, has a new playground with a magic carpet (children’s lift), on which younger visitors can get their ski and snowboarding legs in a fun way. A special area has been created for beginners, with the added advantage that Plan Maison’s many sunny terraces, bars and restaurants are within easy reach.
Panorama windows facing the Breithorn
A panorama window is being built at the Matterhorn glacier paradise, awarding impressive views of the glacier and the Breithorn.
Discover the icy, mystic realms of the world‘s highest-situated glacier palace
You arrive at the glacier palace directly via two elevators from Matterhorn glacier paradise station. You then walk through an ice tunnel that leads you directly into the palace, some fifteen metres beneath the glacier surface. If you are bold and adventuresome, you can walk back through a glacier crevice afterwards. Subtle lighting and ethereal sounds amplify the special mood within this small wonder of the glacier world. Information on glaciology and the creation of the glacier palace and an impressive array of ice sculptures add to the special experience. The new slide through the ice gives your trip into the ice a touch of adventure. The newly designed event room, about 40 m2 large, is ideal for weddings, stand-up receptions, or short presentations. Use is free of charge.
In the VIP gondola you glide in the Matterhorn Express towards the Matterhorn, sitting in a comfortable chair sipping a glass of champagne. This is a trip you will never forget: you’ll be escorted to the VIP gondola at the bottom station, enjoy the trip to the accompaniment of music and completely relaxed, devote yourself to new adventure on Trockener Steg.
Calling all families: First Zipfy Bob event on Gornergrat
On to the bob, ready, steady, go! The first Zipfy Bob event will be held on the Gornergrat near Zermatt on 4 March 2011. Participants will battle it out in classic boardercross style on the sledge run from Rotenboden to Riffelberg. It is also planned to include a Swiss celebrity category. The Zipfy Bob is a sporty plastic sledge with an ergonomic shape, easy and accurate to steer using the joystick at the front. The low centre of gravity, light weight of 1.8 kg and grooves on the underside prevent the bob from tipping over. The Zipfy Bob event guarantees fun and excitement for all ages.
Expansion of catering attractions in the Zermatt ski area
Total renovation of Restaurant Blauherd – from self-service restaurant to bar-lounge
The harsh high-Alpine environment has had a severe effect on the concrete buildings constructed on Blauherd in the 1970s and so the responsible persons at the Citizens’ Council and Matterhorn Group have decided to carry out renovations and new concepts in line with current and future requirements. The planning team has set itself the task of realizing an efficient bar-lounge concept in a relaxed and modern ambiance: the bottom floor will be closed, the terrace area on the ground floor greatly enlarged and the covered area accordingly reduced in size. This will allow a more efficient operation on Blauherd. After the renovation, bar and lounge seating will be available for approximately 60 guests inside and around 200 outside. Catering offers will be reduced to a small but select choice of dishes. Investment costs of CHF 2.5 million will be financed from own resources. The restaurant is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of December 2010.
Conversion and capacity increase at Restaurant Sunnegga
The region’s largest mountain restaurant, with table service catering for up to 1200 meals per day, is being converted for the coming winter. Huge high-season demand has led to lengthy waiting times and far exceeded service capacity. This is to be remedied by converting the table-service restaurant into a self-service buffet with a modern and proven concept. This will reduce waiting times and create a marked increase in capacity.
The investment costs of maximum CHF 2 million are almost exclusively for modifications in the kitchen area. The entire investment will be financed by the Citizens’ Council of Zermatt from own resources. After the conversion, the restaurant will continue to cater for ski schools and also remain available for events. Reopening is planned for December 2010.
