Generations of Experience and Tradition
Many of the Zermatt mountain guides and ski instructors have grown up exploring our beautiful mountains. They are third, fourth or even fifth generation guides or instructors from their families, having gained their first experiences with their fathers and grandfathers.
Our mountain guides and snow sports instructors follow a strictly regulated professional training programme to expand upon their knowledge as seasoned locals. Once they have completed the initial training, they continue to update their training throughout their lives. The personal attention you receive from our expert guides is better than the best ski schools around.
Many of Zermatt’s mountain guides also belong to Zermatt’s Alpine Rescue Center. They form part of the rescue teams that answer the call when mountaineers or skiers get into trouble. During the early summer months this team also controls and replaces the fixed ropes on the upper reaches of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt’s mountain guides are world-renowned. They are known for their skill, prudence and composure and for their integrity with respect to the mountain world, nature and of course, their clients. Many regular visitors to Zermatt have been booking the same mountain guide for decades – whether for climbs among the 4,000-metre peaks around Zermatt or anywhere from Greenland and South America to Turkey, the Himalayas or Alaska. Some visitors and mountain guides enjoy a life-long friendship that crosses national borders.
Many of the Zermatt mountain guides also form part of Zermatt's mountain guide brass band (Bergführermusik Zermatt). The band performs at large events in Zermatt, such as the Folklore Festival.

Get in touch early
The natural beauty of Zermatt creates high demand for our services, especially during peak ski season. Anyone wishing to book a ski instructor, mountain guide, hiking guide, or bike guide is advised to make contact with ZERMATTERS as early as possible.
In addition, the time frames for certain summer ascents and ski tours are limited, and mountain guides are quickly booked up during these times. We recommend booking ahead for these reasons. Also, when visitors first make contact, they will receive tips to help them prepare for their adventure, in order to maximize enjoyment.
