Alpine Garden (Nr. 21b)

Something unique has emerged on the Gornergrat. Europe’s highest alpine garden opened in late summer 2023. It is somewhere to delight in the spectacular alpine flora and to learn more about the alpine flowers in the Valais Alps.

Description

The Alpine Garden is right beside the Rotenboden mountain station and is also easy for people who are not familiar with mountains to reach. Numerous signs with QR codes help you to immerse yourself in a fascinating world of Alpine plants and learn more about them.

The flora on the Gornergrat are found in one of the most biodiverse areas in the Swiss Alps, which is unique for its special position. Many plant species grow higher up here than in many comparable areas.

Near Rotenboden Station

We recommend:

  • Good footwear
  • Hiking poles (optional)
  • Clothing suitable for the weather (always carry a waterproof)

  • Mobile phone with sufficient battery to scan the QR codes 

Another highlight awaits at Rotenboden – the Riffelsee. This can easily be combined with a hike as far as Riffelberg. Just follow the Riffelsee Lake Trail.  

  • Plan every mountain tour carefully and adapt to participants’ fitness level as well as the weather and season.
  • Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential, along with adequate supplies of food and water. In uncertain weather, turn back in good time.
  • Inform others of planned route, and whenever possible avoid going alone.
  • Do not leave the marked routes; do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Please be considerate to other walkers and to plants and animals.
  • Take note of the warning signs drawing attention to the constant danger in river beds and along watercourses below dams and reservoirs.
