Between 1961 and 1964, at the far end of the Matter Valley, a 74m-high water barrier was constructed, damming up the waters from the surrounding glaciers and streams. The Zmutt pumping station built there is now the highest-capacity station feeding the Grande Dixence Dam. Every season, four pumps send around 140 million m³ of water through a tunnel into the hydroelectric plant.
An expert guide will show you how the Zmutt hydroelectric plant works and you can see a 3D model of the Grande Dixence Dam around Zermatt.
