Zermatt Hotels are the Best

Once again, it’s there in black and white in the latest hotel ratings by Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung - Zermatt Hotels are in a class of their own. Twelve hotels in the categories 5, 4 and 3-star were classed among the very best in Switzerland.

This is the sixth time that SonntagsZeitung has rated the best winter hotels in Switzerland, but the first time it has referred to their capacity. Two hotels in Zermatt come out on top in this category. One is “The Omina”, which had 15 more overnight stays last summer. Author of the rating, Karl Wild, had this to say about the hotel: “spectacular location, fascinating design, Michelin star - what more could you want?” Hotel Backstage recorded 12 percent more overnight stays during the summer. Here’s what the reviewers had to say: “Heinz Julen’s masterpiece.” Heinz Julen, architect and local artist, received his second star in the Michelin Guide this winter for his master chef in the After Seven restaurant, Ivo Adam.
With the 3rd place in the category Four Star Hotels the Backstage Hotel has got the best rank in Zermatt. The review for Hotel Alex read: “paintings, furniture and carvings create a delightful work of art in its own right” and for Unique Hotel Post: “The ultimate ‘experience hotel’. Great facelift for The Broken Bar cult disco.”

Strict assessment criteria

Only hotels with at least 12 rooms and their own restaurant are assessed. The assessments also look at scores in hotel and restaurant guides, investment activities, hospitality, charisma and the innovative spirit of the hotelier.
