Hut trekking in the mountain paradise around Zermatt in the middle of the highest peaks and largest glaciers in the Alps.
The package includes:

  • Overnight hut stay with half board in four different huts
  • Welcome apéro in each hut
  • marching tea

The Matterhorn Trek package allows one to experience the mountain world and life in the mountains up close and personal. In 4-6 hour stages over four days, the path leads through the Zermatt mountain world from hut to hut where the majority of the wardens are mountain guides at the same time. After each of the hikes, the hut team has a warm greeting with a welcoming apéro.

Enjoy an unforgettable hike through the Zermatt mountain world without a guide.

Day 1 – Trift
The charming and historic Berggasthaus Trift is a mountain lodge run by the great-granddaughter of the original builder, together with her husband – a fifth-generation mountain guide – and their children.
Climb from Zermatt (1,620 m) through the botanically interesting Trift Valley to the Trift mountain guest house (2,337 m).
Elevation: + 730 m
Distance: 3.7 km

Day 2 – Schönbiel
Named after the sunny terrace at the back of the Mutt Valley where the Schönbiel Hut is located, this is the starting point of breath-taking snow and climbing tours, easily accessible by impressive hikes.
Climb to the viewing points at Höhbalmen and Hohliecht (2,675 m) and over the lateral moraine of the Zmutt Glacier to the Schönbiel Hut (2,694 m). Postcard view of the Matterhorn with an unusual perspective.
Elevation: +780 m, - 430 m
Distance: 11.3 km

Day 3 - Hörnlihütte
Under the Matterhorn North Wall through to the Hörnli Hut (3,260 m). This is where those climbers using the Hörnligrat begin their ascent to the Matterhorn summit. Those hikers who get up early can observe the alpinists parade of head lamps.
Elevation: + 1105 m, - 540 m
Distance: 13.2 km

Day 4 – Gandegg
Clad in traditional Swiss pine, the Gandegg Hut promises more than 135 years of history, as well as a unique view of the Breithorn and the Theodul Glacier.
At the foot of Matterhorn along the Matterhorn glacier trail below the matterhorn East Wall and on to the Gandegg Hut (3'030 m). Imposing view of the Gorner Glacier, Monte Rosa and Breithorn.
Elevation: + 430 m, - 660 m
Distance: 9 km

Day 5 – Zermatt
Descent to Zermatt (1'620 m).
Elevation: - 1415 m
Distance: 8.9 km

For those who would like to complete The Matterhorn Trek by going even higher, a ZERMATTERS mountain guide is available to help you climb the Breithorn at 4,164 metres above sea level (surcharge from CHF 225.- per person bookable in the next step). For the ascent of the Breithorn the following material is necessary: Crampons, climbing harness and ski pole. This can be rented from the Zermatters for CHF 15.00.

The distances and altitudes given are intended as guidance only. Actual times and distances may vary depending on the route chosen.

As a long tour lasting several days in an Alpine environment, the Matterhorn Trek requires careful preparation.

The package can be booked for the period from 26 June up to and including 14 September 2024.
