Newcomer-Line-Up Zermatt Unplugged 2018

01/02/2018

Along with big names like Kodaline or Norah Jones, it is the Newcomer acts and other formats that invite you on a voyage of discovery at Zermatt Unplugged. Musically, but also literally. Every day on ten stages in and around Zermatt, they ensure that the spirit of the festival is felt throughout the village and entire ski area.

The young singer from Thun, Veronica Fusaro, also embarked on a voyage of discovery. Accompanied by individual members of the Zermatt band Wintershome and some photographers, the newcomer spent two days in Zermatt, strapped on skis and visited the outer stages of the festival. High up on Gandegghütte at 3030 m elevation, on the slope to the Blue Lounge, and then to a cozy aperitif on the Cervo Terrace: this is how a festival day could just be for some visitors.

Five Days, 23 Bands, 10 Stages, Four After-Show Locations, One Pass

In addition to the main acts in the marquee, The Alex, on Sunnegga and in the Winkelmatten chapel, 23 bands will appear on a total of ten stages during the five festival days. Breaking Acts, Newcomer Acts, the Artists in Residence, and the legendary Ronnie Scott's All Stars. And all these concerts can be visited with one single pass, the new Unplugged Pass (CHF 50.- for the whole week). With Newcomers, the focus is clearly on young Swiss artists. Undoubtedly, they include the talented Veronica Fusaro from Thun, who will perform solo at Zermatt Unplugged. A second band from Thun, The Souls, drew plenty attention in 2016. With the debut album Eyes Closed they reached third place on the Swiss album charts and played countless concerts. Cyrielle Formaz, an artist from lower Valais, collected several prizes with her project Meimuna in 2017, and her performance at Zermatt Unplugged deserves special attention. Another artist to look forward to with great anticipation is the rapper La Nefera, who will perform in Zermatt in a quartet with trumpet, sousaphone, and drums. Poetic but also angry or nostalgic is the rap music of Sim's from Jura, who will make an appearance with various guest musicians. The Moonlight Gang is an another band from lower Valais that will perform. Their swing and blues arouse a sense of the 30s and 40s and make for dancing through the nights. Black Sea Dahu, six creative minds around the singer-songwriter and bandleader Janine Catherin; Prince Jelleh, the band from Winterthur, which is always good for a surprise live; Tim Freitag, the Zurich band that likes to surprise itself and already has a considerable fan base on Spotify; Marey, the duo that is going on tour in Germany from February onwards; and Šuma Čovjek with its blend of Balkan, chanson, polka, folk, and pop; are five other Newcomer Swiss bands taking the stage at Zermatt Unplugged. From not too far abroad, the Italian singer-songwriter Violetta Zironi and the Stuttgart band Antiheld will make an appearance. Already introduced to the Zermatt Unplugged audience is Max Prosa. The singer-songwriter is the face of this year's campaign and will also bring his poetic songs as a Newcomer act to Zermatt Unplugged. The Newcomer program is completed by a young artist with a unique voice, Freya Ridings from London. For the second time the Newcomer stages are supported by the association "Culture Valais". In collaboration they hence promote Valais culture and offer young bands from Valais a showcase with international appeal. The association was also involved in the selection of artists from Valais.

Extreme jazz, artist in residence and after show parties

For several years already Ronnie Scott's All Stars have been part of the Zermatt Unplugged program. The combo of the legendary London jazz club performs Extreme Jazz daily by good weather on the Gandegghütte (3030 m elevation). Also legendary are the Jam Sessions with the All Stars and numerous guests, which take place on Wednesday and Friday at the Mont Cervin Palace. The Artists in Residence format, however, only started last year. The Two, the Swiss ambassadors of blues, play daily at the Chalet Hotel Schönegg. The Spanish band Travellin’ Brothers, which will perform in the Foyer marquee, also has the blues in the blood. Anyone wishing to round off the festival day with a lavish party at Zermatt Unplugged will get their money's worth at the after-show parties at the Vernissage, The Alex, the Heinz Shop, and the Chalet Ferdinand.
