Newcomer Acts and new Blues Club at Zermatt Unplugged

29/01/2019

Discoveries have always been a part of the acoustic music festival Zermatt Unplugged, like the Matterhorn to Zermatt. The multitude of newcomer acts and new formats at the festival ensure this. The Taste Village offers culinary discoveries with its varied food offerings, and those who have not yet satisfied the hunger for music after the live concerts will find the right sound for dancing at the after parties.

In addition to the previously announced main acts like Passenger, Boy George & Culture Club or James Bay, numerous newcomer bands will once again provide a musical journey of discovery at Zermatt Unplugged 2019. On the five newcomer stages, which are located both in the ski resort of Zermatt (Blue Lounge) as well as in the village (Alex, Cervo, Taste Village, The Cavern), young up-and-coming artists, in particular from Switzerland, appear from noon onwards.

Newcomer Stages Program

Cheers! With the title of their much acclaimed debut album, Nora Steiner and Madlaina Pollina raise their glasses to a world that threatens to stifle complacency. The girlfriend duo Steiner & Madlaina from Zurich composes bittersweet songs between rebellion and hope. Zermatt Unplugged is proud to feature the Swiss artists for the festival campaign. Hardly another ensemble has such a high addictive factor as Cheibe Balagan, the klezmer band from Zurich. Sold out concerts in Moods and the Rote Fabrik in Zurich or at festivals like Montreux Jazz fuel the reputation of this charismatic septet as a guarantee for good moods and dancing ecstasy. The Biel rock band Death by Chocolate is just as successful abroad as in Switzerland. They have played over 600 concerts, prevailed in California at the MUSEXPO against 3000 bands and won the Global Rock Summit. For Zermatt Unplugged, Death by Chocolate perform the first acoustic set in their band’s history. Quiet Island plays magical, harmonic, timeless folk rock, creating a wondrous refuge. When Laurent, Julien, Louise and Julien play with a lot of dexterity and musical skill, concertgoers are enchanted. It has always been something existential that moves the Valais native JulDem. His music is strong and memorable, a blend of pop, soul, reggae and rap. His performance is passionate, his message serious, affectionate, even political. Vera Sola, the US-Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, released her debut album Shades in November 2018. The American Rolling Stone claims: Must get to know! She appears on a Swiss stage for the first time at Zermatt Unplugged. He has won over Yoko Ono, thrilled with his performances at well-known festivals. Had his first appearance at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London, was on tour with Jack Savoretti: Gizmo Varillas, a Southern European troubadour, grew up in the Basque Country. The most exciting debut in Swiss dialect came in 2018 with a band from Eastern Switzerland. Far from the urban sprawl, Reto Kaufmann and his musician friends play the soundtrack to life. Very young, sensitive, and confident is the Austrian artist AVEC. The song Granny, in which she processed her grandmother's Alzheimer’s illness, has made the musician known in the entire German-speaking realm. At Zermatt Unplugged she appears on a festival stage in Switzerland for the first time. Also from Austria is the duo Cari Cari. Their country rock was not only taken up by blogs, radio stations, and magazines, but also underpinned Gabriel Novis' surf movie Winter and contributed songs to the soundtrack of the American TV series Shameless. No one is able to immerse the magical, mystical world of the Valais mountains in such a universe of dark tones as Tanya Barany, the British-Swiss musician from Visperterminen. With a velvety voice, bold riffs and wide harmonies, the musician paints soundscapes of great beauty. Cyril Cyril are a duo from Geneva traversing the crossroads of genres and traditions. Cyril Yeterian and Cyril Bondi: As former members of the cult bands Mama Rosin and Plaistow, it was time to create something completely new, with a hypnotic effect. Coming from New Orleans, a massive groove machine piled up, a "dirty" rock 'n' roll convergence that swings dry and in old-fashioned Southern style. Sacha Love hurls his debut at the world: 819 Valence Street. Blues has never sounded so brash. The Eskies are known for rapturous live shows that turn concertgoers into a wild dancing crowd. The Irish tell stories of death and the devil, rebellion and love, fear and deceit. Folk noir with a decent pinch of gypsy: That's how the last party has to be before the ship goes down. Access to all concerts on the Newcomer Stages are included with the Unplugged Pass. The association "Culture Valais" supports the Newcomer Stages for the third time and was involved in the selection of Valais artists. The collaboration promotes Valais culture and offers young bands from Valais a showcase with international appeal.

Philipp Fankhauser’s Midnight Blues

For the first time this year there will be a blues club at Zermatt Unplugged. The host will be none other than the Swiss Philipp Fankhauser. With his band and guest musicians, he turns the Hotel Alex's lounge into a midnight gathering for blues fans, reclaiming the legendary days of Hotel Alex. Musicians such as Peter Gabriel, Bob Geldof, Roger Taylor, and Jon Lord were there passing the mic in the 70s and 80s.

After the concerts is before the After Parties

As soon as the last sounds of the live concerts have faded in Zermatt, the DJs take over the stages at the after parties. From electronic rhythms, jazzy beats, Arabian sounds to live DJ performances. The After Party program at Zermatt Unplugged is versatile and international. From Thursday to Saturday in The Alex, listen to The Avener, Klangkarussell, Monolink, and Gary Davies. In the Vernissage & Heinz Julen shop from Tuesday to Saturday, the DJs on deck are Kellerkind, Jiggler, Sam Shure, Niko Schwind, and Cup of Jazz. Access to the after parties is included in the Unplugged Pass.
