For the fourth time, the Matterhorn Ultraks, professionals and amateurs, meet at the start on the Zermatt Kirchplatz on the third weekend of August. The number of participants (over 2,000) already exceeds all expectations of this relatively young Alpine race. And over 600 runners want to tackle the most difficult stretch, the 46K over 48 km.
The concept of the race is to generate enthusiasm for mountain running. The mountain landscape in Zermatt does its bit – and the organisers offer a new course, which is also relatively easy for beginning runners to overcome: The VZS course (Vertical Zermatt Sunnegga) over 2.5 km. It begins at the Kirchplatz and has 655 m of altitude to overcome. The first runners reach Sunnegga after 45 minutes. Especially attractive: The race ends with an on-site small mountain festival for runners and guests alike.
Various starts in different categories and course variations invite spectators to fire on the runners in all performance and age classes. The most important races are:
- Children’s race: 700 m and 2.1 km (in the village)
- VZS course (Vertical Zermatt Sunnegga) 2.5 km, 655 m altitude
- 16K course, 17 km, 1,100 m altitude
- 30K course, 31.5 km, 1,950 m altitude
- 46K course, 48 km, 3,600 m altitude
- Company relay race, 31.5 km, 1,950 m altitude in three sections
