Cinema

The Vernissage is a cinema, concert venue and club, all in one. This is where the idea for the Zermatt Unplugged music festival was born.

Description

The cinema and club at the Backstage Hotel have been welcoming guests since 1992. The Zermatt artist and hotelier Heinz Julen designed and created this venue with its unique Zermatt atmosphere. Highlights include the giant chandeliers, pulled across the ceiling by chains before each film to reveal a clear view of the screen. The seating is also different to the usual arrangement in city cinemas.

In high season, the cinema shows action movies and family films. In the early evening, the Vernissage also regularly screens documentary films about the Matterhorn by August Julen (born in Zermatt in 1922, father of Heinz Julen).

The cinema also serves as a concert venue and club. When the cinema is converted into a concert venue, the seats and chandeliers disappear, and the stage appears as if by magic. Among the stars that have appeared here since 2007 as part of the annual Zermatt Unplugged festival are Chris de Burgh, Stephan Eicher and Züri West. The club setting and the proximity of performers to audience make for a wonderfully intimate atmosphere.

During gigs and parties, the bar on the upper level offers a clear view down to the stage and dance floor.
