The plant world of Zermatt
As early as the end of the 18th century, plant experts were travelling to Zermatt together with their botanical specimen boxes. Word soon spread about the beauty of the plant world, but also of the extraordinary wealth of botanical rarities. No less than 40 Zermatt plants species are very rare in the rest of Switzerland, and seven of them are even considered to be worldwide rarities. The Zermatt Bergbahnen AG is endeavouring to protect the vegetation. Building projects werden are alway planned taking the plant stocks into account. Several rare species have already been mapped and are protected from disturbance under a specially designed concept.
Staghorn cinquefoil (potentilla multifida): only occurs in Switzerland in sheep pastures in Zermatt.
