Google Street View Piste Prize: Zermatt is Switzerland’s most popular ski region!

Google Street View has awarded the Piste Prize to the most popular ski region in Switzerland. And thanks to its guests, Zermatt has won the vote in decisive fashion.

Commenting on the win, Tourism Director Daniel Luggen said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have taken first place and we thank all our loyal Zermatt fans for being so diligent in casting their votes”. He also declared that “With the help of Google Street View, our guests will soon also be able to at least swish ‘virtually’ down the ski slopes and enjoy the magnificent views of the Matterhorn, even between their holidays.” He continued “In any case it will relieve home sickness a little and make people hungry for snow, sun and fun in Zermatt!”

Voting, including a competition, ran until 14 February 2011. In addition to Zermatt, the available choices included the Aletsch Arena, Saas-Fee, Verbier, Gstaad, Engadin – St. Moritz, Andermatt and many others.

Switzerland Tourism offered an attractive competition prize: a 3-night stay in the winning ski region for 2 persons including a 3-day skipass each. The winners are Ursula and Hans Müller from Riehen/BS. They will soon be cutting curves on the over 360 kilometres of ski pistes in Zermatt.

Ski piste pictures on Google Street View
The occasion for the vote and competition is the Internet presentation of ski piste pictures on Google Street View. To this end, this winter a snowmobile will travel around photographing pistes, now first of all in Zermatt. Google Street View has as yet primarily showed cities and excursion destinations but the Swiss ski world is now getting the opportunity to put itself in the frame. The date from when the pictures will be published on the Internet will be announced at a later date.
