Valais meets Bern – the KOMET meets the KOMETIN

Cooperation between the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Gurtenbahn on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the mini-railway.

The Kleineisenbahn Gurten (Gurten mini-railway) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2010. Various anniversary activities are planned, including an anniversary event celebrating the opening and operation of the KOMETIN (Little Comet) mini-railway of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn with its new rack railway section at the Gurten play area. The KOMETIN rack railway train is a copy of the comfortable metre-gauge KOMET railcar of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to a scale of 1:6.

Valais meets Bern / Bern meets Valais Cooperation
Zermatt is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the mini-railway and the inauguration of the KOMETIN mini-railway on the 1st and 2nd of May. The existing railway track will be extended by a mountain section with rack railway on this occasion. In view of this event, the MGBahn and Gurtenbahn have entered into a cooperation for 2010 following the motto “Valais meets Bern – the KOMET meets the KOMETIN”. The local mountain of Bern, the Gurten, is a popular destination for people from Bern, Swiss guests and tourists from abroad. Visitors enjoy a delightful view over the Swiss capital from the Gurten.

With Wolli on the Gurten!
Wolli will also be making a little trip to Bern on the 1st and 2nd of May. There will be a great celebration for all Wolli fans and railway enthusiasts with many attractions, such as a large climbing wall, a slackline, a competition and much more. And you can already start looking forward now! Sheets for making a model of the Komet are available for all children at the desk of Zermatt Tourism. Anyone who brings a Komet to the May weekends on the Gurten can take part in a draw, with the main prize being a ride on the footplate of one of the original KOMETS of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn!

Good to know: The Gurten mini-railway is open daily from March to October, and also has a steam locomotive every Sunday!
