For the German Automobile Club, the skiing attractions of the Matterhorn ski paradise make it the absolute top ski region in the Alps and it has thus been awarded first place. The reason: the region’s numerous pistes are extremely varied and also cross national borders.
As of this weekend, 80% of the prepared pistes at the Matterhorn ski paradise will be open. That means over 200 km of pistes for snow sport fans to indulge their passion in conditions normally found in mid-winter.

The Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) in Zermatt with its viewing platform at an altitude of 3,883 metres above sea level is the sunniest place in Switzerland. What could be more natural that to utilise this environmentally friendly energy. The solar restaurant opened by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG on the south flank of the mountain for the 2008/09 winter season produces all the electricity for heating and ventilation using the photovoltaic system built into the facade. Thanks to the optimised design, the building fulfils the requirements of the Minergie-P standard. The energy concept is a role model for the entire Alpine region and it was therefore awarded the 2010 Solar Prize for new buildings in Zurich.
The Europaweg trail leads from Saas-Fee to Zermatt at a high and almost uniform altitude. The Europaweg trail is very well known worldwide, and is also very popular. The view, the altitude and the quality of the trail are unique. Five years ago, however, the artificial passageway by the Grabenufer (trench bank) above Randa had to be closed; it could no longer withstand the forces of the pressure of the mountain. Thanks to a new suspension bridge, the Europaweg trail can now once again be used over the whole of its original route.
