World Snow Awards 2012: Zermatt is the world’s best après-ski resort
Zermatt has picked up yet another award. Right on cue for the 2012/2013 winter reason the resort of Zermatt has been voted the world’s best for après-ski. The winners were chosen by a UK panel of ski and snowboard experts and a wide audience of industry specialists.
These inaugural World Snow Awards were presented in a total of 28 categories. The awards were for snowsports resorts, kit suppliers, and airlines the world over. Switzerland scored no fewer than four times: with Zermatt as the world’s best après-ski resort; the Swiss company Mammut as the best safety kit manufacturer (and a Zermatt partner); “Swiss” as the best airline; and Geneva Airport as the best airport in the world. Zermatt picked up the Award for the “great diversity of its offer”. As the organisers themselves put it, “after all, there’s more to après-ski than dancing on the tables and drinking beer”.
The Who’s Who of Snowsports
As the panel of industry experts from the UK’s Ski and Snowboard Magazine pointed out, the Awards honour “the best in the snowsports industry”. The award ceremony was held at Earls Court in London in early November to mark the 25th anniversary of the winter sports magazine. Among the jury members were the best-known experts in British skiing and snowboarding, including renowned snowsports journalists. It was not just the industry experts who expressed their opinion: the public present at the Ski and Snowboard Show in London also had a say. Nick Miller, editor of Ski & Snowboard Magazine: “The ski and snowboard world is one of the travel industry’s most vibrant and innovative sectors. The World Snow Awards will help to highlight those that are miles ahead and show the way for the rest of us.”
