The Church of St. Mauritius in Zermatt is obviously very popular. The church pews are always well occupied during Sunday Mass, and, on high holy days such as Christmas and Easter, both locals and guests crowd into the wooden pews. The Zermatt Zermatlantis Museum will be celebrating its fifth anniversary on the 18th December 2011. Over this time, it has become an important pillar of Zermatt’s alpine history and culture, with as many as 1,000 visitors flocking to the underground world of the museum on some days.

Zermatt is playing its trump card – the Snowmaker – so that skiers and snowboarders can take to good pistes in the early days of winter as well. The snow machine produces snow regardless of temperature, even above freezing point. And so a good snow base can be laid in early autumn to ensure perfect pistes in winter.

The Glacier Express – the cult train for railway fans – travels from the Matterhorn to Piz Palü and St. Moritz. Admittedly there are quicker ways to reach the Upper Engadin, but none more beautiful. Alpine landscapes seem to glide past the train’s panoramic windows on this pleasure trip. You can also enjoy fine food and drink. Head waiter Thayan Sellathurai, is one of the many staff looking after the wellbeing of passengers.

For six weeks in the summer, a herd of Blackneck goats passes through the Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt each morning and evening. This is the so-called “Geissenkehr”. Thousands of guests stand in rows to see and photograph these black and white goats. But what are Blackneck goats?

The Zermatt Civic Community is planning to invest several million francs in the renovation and extension of the existing mountain huts on the Matterhorn. The modernized accommodation is to be opened in 2015 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. It is intended to upgrade the Hörnli Hut with space to sleep 120 and a daytime restaurant to meet increased guest requirements and the latest standards of technology.

The Dossen Glacier Garden in Zermatt has been made richer by a huge attraction. The newly constructed hanging bridge over the Gornera Gorge makes it easier and quicker to reach the glacier garden. The bridge will be opened on Saturday, 18 June 2011, signalling the completion of another stage of development in the glacier garden.
