Official opening of the Sunnegga funicular

29.11.2013

On 29 November 2013, Zermatt Bergbahnen officially inaugurated the new Sunnegga funicular and the completely renovated stations. The proud godmother of the funicular is the Zermatt ski racer Fränzi Aufdenblatten. One day before the start of the winter season, Zermatt Bergbahnen representatives were clearly pleased and proud to be introducing this latest rail innovation in the Matterhorn area.

Opening ceremony
The day before the start of the winter season saw the official inauguration of the new Sunnegga funicular and the stations, which have undergone a complete renovation. The ceremony was hosted by Frédéric Bumann, Secretary of Walliser Bergbahnen. He guided guests through the evening event, which included a panel with representatives of Zermatt Bergbahnen and Garaventa discussing the origins of the overall project and the challenges it presented. “The fact that the new funicular was ready to restart operations after a reconstruction phase of only eight weeks is all thanks to exemplary project management and the tireless efforts of every single worker involved,” said Hans Peter Julen, Chairman of the Board of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG.

The funicular was then presented to the public with a unique LED dance show. Fränzi Aufdenblatten, the new railway’s proud godmother, was unable to attend the ceremony in person because of the World Cup event in Beaver Creek. Speaking in a video message, she said: “I am very proud to be asked to act as godmother to the Sunnegga funicular. I see this honour as recognition for what I have tried to achieve over the last few years.” The Reverend Stefan Roth concluded the ceremony by blessing the railway and wishing it a long and happy future.
The new Sunnegga funicular
For 32 years, what was hailed at the time as Europe’s first Alpine metro took visitors up to Sunnegga, until it was replaced by a new, ultramodern funicular in summer 2013. Today, passengers enjoy greater comfort in the more spacious compartments and an almost silent trip, which takes less than four minutes at speeds of up to 12 metres per second. No other funicular in Switzerland is as fast.

Completely revamped stations with a new look
After a six-week renovation period, the stations along the route have a new look. With eight LED screens, a dual display and large-format imagery in the tunnel, the railway offers visitors an exciting experience even before they set foot in the station. “The screens here in the stations and in the rest of the excursion area are a very practical and visually appealing source of information for visitors, and can be updated dynamically to reflect changes in day-to-day conditions,” explains Markus Hasler, CEO of Zermatt Bergbahnen. The innovative digital equipment was provided by netvico from Germany, working with the Swiss company richnerstutz.
