Zermatter Martin Anthamatten took gold at yesterday’s World Championships

Martin Anthamatten is the golden boy! Yesterday he took surprise first place in the sprint discipline in the Ski Mountaineering World Championships in Claut, Italy. The man from Zermatt is thus the 2011 World Champion in the newest discipline in ski mountaineering.

This was the first time for the sprint discipline to be included in a World Championship and demanded skill and speed from the athletes. In the race Wednesday 23rd February in Claut, competitors had to master an 85-metre ascent and demonstrate strong nerves and expertise on a downhill slalom.

Martin Anthamatten snatched victory from runner-up, Italian Robert Antonioli, by a mere 17-hundredths of a second. The winning time: 3 minutes 2 seconds and 7 hundredths. His teammate Yannick Ecoeur took 3rd place.

Martin Anthamatten came 10th in the previous day’s vertical race. Switzerland is now third in the national medal rankings, behind France and Italy. In the overall athlete rankings, Swiss Nathalie Etzensperger is currently in first place with Martin Anthamatten third.
