Success for Martin Anthamatten and Andreas Steindl
Ski Mountaineering European Championships in Pelvoux (F): February 2012 will go down in the annals of history for the Ski Mountaineering participants from Zermatt. Martin Anthamatten took several medals home with him, and his Junior Team colleague Andreas Steindl was also very well placed.
Zermatt is the Eldorado of Ski Mountaineering. The Ski Mountaineering races in Europe were also contested by the successful athlete Martin Anthamatten and the newcomer Andreas Steindl from Zermatt. Among the Swiss athletes present, Martin Anthamatten made the biggest haul of medals at the European Championships (4.-10.2.2012): Gold in the Relay, silver in the Combination and three times bronze (Individual Race, Team und Vertical). Martin Anthamatten has the following to say about his great success: “I’m happy with all the medals, but particularly with those in the Individual Race and the Vertical Race. But the gold medal in the relay was still the best possible finale.“
Andreas Steindl also well placed in the races
Andreas Steindl from Zermatt was taking part in the Swiss team for the first time, and achieved 9th place in the Vertical Race for the Elite Juniors and in the Combination. The SAC Swiss Ski Mountaineering team won a total of 23 medals at the EC in Pelvoux, and thereby finished in third place in the national rankings. We are all excited about the prospects of the Zermatt athletes at this year’s Patrouille des Glaciers, which will take place from 25.-28.4. (with the start in Zermatt). Martin Anthamatten and his team will be defending the title and the record time of 5’52’20“.
