Matterhorn an official finalist in the „New 7 Wonders of Nature“ competition
The Matterhorn has progressed to the next stage in the election process for the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The voting has now been going on for two years, with almost 500 landscapes, parks and lakes being nominated. After several rounds of voting, the Matterhorn is the only Swiss monument that has reached this stage. It recently won an Internet vote in the „Mountains“ category, and then passed a selection process by an international group if experts who evaluated the candidates.
The Matterhorn is more than a wonder of creation. Because of its shape and the fact that its stands quite alone, it is regarded as the epitome of a mountain. But it is even more: There is no other known mountain in the world whose natural shape comes as close to a pyramid as the Matterhorn. This pyramid shape symbolises the link between nature and culture, landscape and history.
What will happen next for the Matterhorn as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature? There is now a choice between the 28 finalists, four similar monuments in seven categories, and the seven winners will be presented in 2011 within the framework of a great show.
