Google search engine: Zermatt is Switzerland’s most searched locality
On internet searches on Google, Zermatt is the most searched locality in Switzerland. The Matterhorn is also a popular search item. Observations on the Zeitgeist.
Is everyone dreaming about a holiday in Zermatt? We don’t know the answer to this, but what we do know is that on Google, the most searched locality in Switzerland is Zermatt. Already in 2011, the internet company conducted what it calls its "Zeitgeist" research into search trends. To do this, Google usually analyses one trillion search queries – spread across countries throughout the world – to find out which queries had the largest volume of searches.
The information presented on the Google website has been normalised, which means that it reflects the number of searches this year compared to the total number of searches on Google. It does not represent absolute search volumes, but searches on a scale of 0 to 100. Each query is divided by the maximum value this search scored (100).
And should you wish to know how your favourite terms on the web performed, you can look up this information for yourself on Google Trends.
Zermatt in 1st place
Google users in Switzerland who searched on the web for cities and towns were mainly looking for Zermatt. Basel was in second place, while Lausanne came third (see illustration). Even with searches for mountain peaks, Zermatt is well represented. The Matterhorn came in 6th place. Already by the end of 2011, Zermatt ranked No. 1.
