The solar restaurant on the glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) was awarded the 2010 European Solar Prize in Berlin on 10 December. The restaurant has thus surpassed the 2010 Swiss Solar Prize that it won in September.
The solar restaurant opened by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG for the 2008/2009 winter season produces electricity for heating and ventilation using a photovoltaic system integrated into the facade. The building fulfils the requirements of the Minergie-P energy-efficiency standard. With these two awards, the energy concept provides a role model for sustainable construction in the high-Alpine region. The jury particularly praised the great publicity effect achieved thanks to the large number of visitors to the Klein Matterhorn. Over 500,000 people from all over the world visit the Matterhorn glacier paradise every year.
