Zermatt: world’s best winter destination together with St. Moritz and Aspen/USA

For the third time running, Zermatt takes first place in the Bilanz magazine rankings of the world’s best winter destinations. However, for the first time, it shares the title with St. Moritz and Aspen. The business magazine applauds Zermatt’s piste diversity, ski-hut culture, hotel worlds and restaurant scene.

Each of the three winter destinations achieved 79 points from a possible 100. Zermatt received maximum points for its piste diversity, ski-hut culture, hotel worlds and restaurant scene. It also won nine points each for family friendliness and overall appearance. Nightlife was awarded only seven points. Zermatt lay well behind for winter-walking trails/cross-country runs as well as alternatives for non-skiers, scoring only three points each.

Bilanz applauded Zermatt for its well-developed, international ski area with the highest concentration of 4000-metre peaks. Added to this was the proportion of often family-run hotels. An asset that is particularly pleasing, but unfortunately not reflected in the points, is the friendliness of the Zermatt people: “The fact that most Zermatters are deeply aware that guests not only pay but also expect service in return is better in comparison to other Swiss top ski resorts. Both the degree of hospitality and value for money are impressive,” writes Bilanz. Seventy-five per cent of guests return, many of them well-known personalities. The recipe for success in Zermatt is: “Celebrities enjoy the fact that they can simply be themselves in Zermatt”.
