Zermatt Accommodation: News from the Village and the Pistes

Mid-December sees the opening of a new hotel, the Matterhorn Lodge. Renovations have also been underway at the Hotel Holiday and the Hotel Bahnhof. Not only that, a fresh breeze is blowing up on the Gandegg Hut. And lots more besides.

The Matterhorn is certainly a defining feature of the village that lies at its feet, but it has also influenced the design of the Hotel Matterhorn Lodge. An unmistakable tell-tale sign is the façade of the four-star hotel. The large stones integrated into the stone and timber façade have all come from the foot of the Matterhorn’s north face. The rooms are named after famous climbing points on the Matterhorn, for example the Hörnli or Zmutt-Grat. The bar with its open fireplace is called Solvay Hütte and is open to non-residents. The hotel, due to open in mid-December 2012, has 14 rooms, one suite and a spacious spa & wellness facility. It is run by Harry and Felicitas Lauber.

News, too, from the Hotel Bahnhof: Over the past few months this long-established hotel has had a some makeover, with fresh paintwork and new furnishings. Its showpiece is the attic room. The quaint mountain hut character of the spacious multiple-occupancy room has been cleverly redesigned with more privacy in mind. Even when all 15 beds are occupied, each guest has their own private space, with their own reading light and power socket.

Major renovation work has also been underway at the Hotel Holiday. The Restaurant La Calèche has been redesigned, the bar concept given a new look, and there is now a new reception area to welcome hotel guests. And everything in a cosy alpine style, with lots of wood and warm colours.
A fresh breeze is blowing up on the Gandegg Hut (3030 m). Mountain guide and rescuer Richard Lehner-Gaudin and his wife Yvette have taken over the mountain hut. The façade has already been given a new coat of yellow paint. As in the past, there are plenty of Valais specialities on offer, served both in solid and liquid form. Opening: 8 December 2012. Every Wednesday evening there is a Hüttenabend with mulled wine, a cheese fondue and overnight accommodation at the hut (advance booking required). In March and April, guests doing the Haute Route can book their overnight stay in advance at the Gandegg Hut.

“Outer space” is the motto for the 2012/2013 winter season at the Iglu-Dorf Zermatt. Among the attractions on fondue evenings (advance booking required) is taking a fresh look at the stars in the open air.

Once again this winter, the Kulmhotel Gornergrat is offering its Starlight Dinners every Thursday. Although the observatory is currently closed for renovations (from 20.12.12 to 28.3.2013), guests will nonetheless be able to gaze at the stars this winter through the lens of the telescope installed on the terrace.

There is no mistaking the inspiration behind the design of the Matterhorn Lodge.

Woods, stone and glass dominate the interior of the Matterhorn Lodge

The Hotel Bahnhof now offers plenty of privacy in its multiple occupancy room.

Yvette and Richi Lehner are the new caretakers at the Gandegg Hut.
