Protection of forests and wild game
In 2003, in collaboration with gamekeepers, forest wardens and biologists, Zermatt Bergbahnen AG drew up a forest and wild game protection programme with the aim of improving conditions for the forest and for wild game in the winter. Segregated conservation areas were fenced off and marked with notices. Specially constructed game observation points a short distance from the beaten track now provide an opportunity to watch animals living in the wild without disturbing them. A wide-ranging information campaign has made local people and winter visitors more sensitive to wild-life protection - off-piste free-rode skiing in particular often has fatal consequences for animals, which are already weakened by the winter.
