World's highest miniature railway on the Gornergrat
The miniature railway on Berne's local mountain, the Gurten, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To mark this event, the existing track route has been extended by a mountain section, complete with cogwheel operation. The new cog-wheel train proudly bears the name KOMETIN. It is a 1:6-scale replica of the comfortable metre-gauge trainset (KOMET) operated by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and the Gurtenbahn have partnered up in 2010 under the motto "Valais meets Berne – KOMET meets KOMETIN". This sees the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn together with tourism partners Zermatt, Grächen, Brig-Belalp, Goms and the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway presenting what they offer, at various events on the Gurten. The Gurtenbahn will travel with the KOMETIN miniature railway to various events in the Valais.
Visitors who wish to see and experience the KOMETIN at first hand will have the ideal opportunity from 06-08 August 2010. During this period, the KOMETIN will present itself as the world's highest miniature railway amidst the magnificent mountainscape on the Gornergrat, near Zermatt, at 3089 metres above sea level. Every day from 09:00 to 17:00 hrs the KOMETIN will stand ready to take young and old on a free ride at the upper station of the Gornergrat Bahn. Hop onboard and enjoy the ride!
