Unprepared powder snow slopes are the El Dorado for expert skiers and snowboarders. 38 kilometres of yellow pistes that are not really pistes at all, made accessible by ski lifts and carefully marked to withstand avalanches. At the Rothorn, the Schwarzsee or in the newly opened area of Triftji / Stockhorn, they run over hillocks and through gullies, at angles of inclination that require strong nerves. On the Stockhorn, freeriders start from the restored mountain station at 3,405 m, and have a marvellous 1,200 metres of altitude to themselves. The season starts in the middle of January. And if black pistes have become too boring for you, and you’re not sure about changing to yellow pistes, simply book a mountain guide in the Alpin Center. They know every last hillock in Zermatt.
