Zermatt: Gourmet stronghold of the Alps

Zermatt is all about pure enjoyment. Not just on the hiking trails and slopes, but also on the plate. Zermatt restaurants are always mentioned in the gastronomic guides GaultMillau Switzerland and Guide Michelin. The restaurants are highly praised and regularly awarded points by these guides. For years now, Zermatt is the only Swiss village to boast the highest number of points in the popular GaultMillau gastronomic guide.

No fewer than two Zermatt restaurants are awarded a Michelin star: Restaurant Heimberg as a new entry and, for the third time already, Ristorante Capri. For Zermatt Tourism’s Director Daniel Luggen, these stars are highly significant: “Zermatt is now definitely the gourmet stronghold of the Alps.” The team headed up by Andrea Migliaccio at Ristorante Capri is already well established: indeed, this is the third time the Capri, at the Seiler Hotel Le Petit Cervin, has garnered the coveted Michelin star. But that’s not all. The Michelin Guide has delved deep into the Zermatt resort as a whole. 36 hotels and 14 restaurants are listed.

Also the gourmet guide GaultMillau, edition 2013, compliments the restaurants of Zermatt. 20 are listed in this most popular gourmet guide in Switzerland. They unify 248 GaultMillau points. And 9 hotels in Zermatt are registered among the 100 best Swiss gourmet hotels. Zermatt has 100 restaurants in the village and 50 mountain restaurants in the hills above, situated directly at the hiking trails and the slopes. The mountain restaurants are worldfamous and some of them are listed among the 20 restaurants that are also awarded with GaultMillau points.

Furthermore, each year in August Zermatt is hosting the Swiss Food Festival during a whole weekend: Kitchen Party on Friday evening, gourmet specialities on the Kirchplatz on Saturday starting shortly before midday and the legendary cable car breakfast in the Matterhorn Express gondolas. On the Bahnhofstrasse culinary chalets display products from the region from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.
What’s the reason for Zermatt being a gourmet stronghold? Zermatt has up to 80 per cent long-time regulars constantly seeking for various culinary specialities. And if anyone would like to visit three different restaurants on the same evening is recommended to take part et the “kitchen around”: Each of the three courses is served in a different place. The participants eat in the restaurants’ kitchens and can observe how the delicacies are prepared.
