Restoring Nature

Damage to the landscape comes about, firstly, due to natural influences, and secondly, due to the exploitation of the land. If destroyed plant cover is not stabilised, the gaps widen and erosion increases. Zermatt Bergbahnen AG is endeavouring to avoid spoiling further areas and to restore areas already damaged to make them as close to natural as possible. An extensive nature restoration initiative is taking place in the Gant region in summer 2005. This will involve returning a large number of present routes to nature. The Damage Inventory programme has also included tidying up the natural landscape over the past three years - by the targeted removal of facilities that are no longer used.
