Environmental measures taken by Zermatt Bergbahnen
The mountain railways give people from all over the world the opportunity to experience the magnificent natural world of Zermatt in a number of ways. Real environmental management is necessary to ensure that this beauty remains unspoiled, and that a modern railway business can nevertheless still operate. In 2002, Zermatt Bergbahnen AG thereby appointed a working party made up of environmental and planning offices to draw up an overall concept for "Sustainable skiing areas around Zermatt" that would indicate the points of conflict between building projects and nature. The range of duties of this working party have subsequently been widened to also cover the supervision of building works, consultation in all questions concerning the environment, the preparation of environmental reports on building applications and so on.
In construction projects - on average, one transport installation has to be replaced each year - the stock of ecologically valuable areas is taken into account when choosing the routes for the lines.
Zermatt Bergbahnen AG takes on a pioneering role with its programme for the restoration of environmental damage from earlier times. It also endeavours to ensure a continuous and transparent collaboration with the environmental associations.
