5. Alpine Week (18. - 25.06.2011)

Zermatt is famous because of the Matterhorn. But did you know that there are another 38 peaks around Zermatt that exceed the magical height of 4,000 mmetres above sea level?
It's therefore no wonder that our village is firmly rooted in alpinism; this has shaped the development of tourism over the last 200 years and, even today, mountaineering, climbing and high altitude touring are still an important part of our core expertise.
With the Alpine Week, we are giving you the opportunity to obtain a good overview of the wide range of alpine activities that are available. Regardless of whether you are a professional or a beginner, the Alpine Week has interesting offers for every skill level and every age group – come along and be convinced. We look forward to your visit.

Requirements and preparation for a Matterhorn ascent

In order to climb the Matterhorn, you need an excellent physical fitness (9 to 10 hours endurance) and a very good acclimatisation. This is best achieved by intensive training in the Zermatt area (1,000 to 1,500 metres of altitude difference per day, climbing with an hourly performance of 500 metres of altitude).

Are you now ready to ascend the Matterhorn?
The ideal test route for preparing for an ascent of the Matterhorn is located between Zermatt (Riedweg, 50 metres after the junction with the AHV Weg) and Sunnegga. The path is marked and can be followed without a mountain guide.
Depending on how long you need for the test route, your condition is either good enough for a Matterhorn ascent or you will have to improve your condition by further training.

Description of the mountains

Breithorn

The normal ascent of the Breithorn is the easiest four-thousand-metre peak to summit in the Zermatt area. It offers you the fantastic experience to climb up to 4000 metres for the first time. In the morning you take the cable car up to Klein Matterhorn (3880m) and then begin the ascent. The ascent and descent in snow and ice and is suitable for experiencend hikers.

Half –travers of the Breithorn

The half-traverse of the Breithorn takes you along the exposed rock ridge from east to west to the main summit of Breithorn. Solid rock, climbing passages with grade 4 difficulty, and the partially exposed ridge with a breathtaking view, give this climb a unique high-alpine character. The climb requires good acclimatisation as well as climbing experience (climbing with crampons).

Pollux

The twins Castor and Pollux are both accessible as a day trip from Klein Matterhorn. The "smaller twin" offers you a varied ascent in snow, ice and rock, as well as easy rock climbing with the help of metal chains attached to the rock. The climb requires good acclimatisation as well as good physical condition.

Castor

The ascent of the "bigger twin" offers you varied snow and ice climbing. It is suitable for ambitious climbers who are well acclimatised and in good physical condition.

Alphubel

The Alphubel belongs to the giant mountains of the Mischabel group and can be climbed from the Täsch hut at 2701m. The route (technically an easy climb "Ice Nose") is in snow and ice and requires good physical condition with experience using crampons.

Monte Rosa Dufourspitze

After a long ascent in snow, ice and rock (level 3) you can experience the unique panorama from the top of the second highest mountain of the Alps. The starting point is Monte Rosa hut at 2795m. The climb requires excellent physical condition, experience in climbing with crampons and prior acclimatisation to the altitude. The ascent from Monte Rosa hut takes approx. 6-7h, the descent approx. 4h. (normal route).

Gorge Adventure

A dynamic Fixed Rope Route that will
both challenge and excite you!

The Gorner gorge between Furri (1865m) and Zermatt (1620m) is composed of imposing rock formations such as glacial mills and water polished rocks, within thundering floods of water - a unique wonder of nature!

The traverse of the Gorge is about 1 km long and takes approx. 3-4 hours. The dynamic Fixed Rope Route leads you across the polished rock with the use of steel cables and devices which are attached to the rock.

The highlights of the traverse are three abseiling passages, three flying foxes (of which the longest is 80 metres), a pendulum swing and a Himalayan bridge, which gives you the ultimate surge of adrenalin.

Throughout the entire adventure you are constantly secured, and you will not be in contact with the water.

The Gorge Adventure cannot be attempted on one's own; it can only be done with a fully qualified mountain guide who is familiar with the environment.

New Monte Rosa Hut

Surrounded by the highest peaks of the Switzerland you will traverse the Gorner glacier to get to the Monte Rosa hut; the starting point of the ascent of the Monte Rosa.
