About 400 kilometres of marked hiking paths and mountain trails around Zermatt, Täsch and Randa offer varying degrees of difficulty, gradients and routes for all levels. Depending upon what one is looking for, hiking in the Alps around Zermatt can be an athletic challenge, an enjoyable family outing or a relaxing and pleasant walking tour.

The Täsch-Zermatt Railway Trail is easy to hike and especially well suited for families. The trail passes through forests and meadows over hill and dale. Besides the rail wagons of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, numerous and also rare Alpine flowers and even marmots, which live here, can be seen and enjoyed.

Somewhat more difficult but still suitable for a family excursion the Five Lakes Walk. This hike leads to and past the mountain lakes of Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee and Leisee and is considered uniquely beautiful and especially varied. Each of the lakes is distinctive in its shape, colour and character. In three of these mountain waters, a mirrored image of the Matterhorn can be admired.

The hike from Schwarzsee to the Schönbiel Hut is particularly challenging. The trail to the hut traverses a very divers and varied mountain landscape. At the hut, the all-encompassing view of the north wall of the Matterhorn is overwhelming.

Along the hiking trails, countless mountain restaurants invite one to take long pauses for refreshments and reinforcements. The tour planner helps put together individual hiking tours in the mountains around Zermatt and the Matterhorn.
