Blauherd - FluhalpWinter hiking

The winter walk from Blauherd to Fluhalp (theme trail "Surviving of the animals in winter") is perfect for soaking up the sun.

Best season

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

In winter, this must be the sunniest trail in Zermatt. It maintains a more or less steady altitude of 2,500 m, following first a track and then a path towards Fluhalp. It’s well worth taking the time to read the information panels en route, which describe the survival strategies of the animals that spend the winter here. Marmots, for example, hibernate in family burrows; their body temperature sinks to 5° Celsius, and their hearts beat just ten times a minute.

  • Appropriate for children from age 4
  • “Surviving in winter” theme trail
  • Chamois may be observed grazing on the slopes

(Hiking time for the walk back: approx. 1h)

We recommend:
  • Good footwear
  • Hiking poles (optional)
  • Warm winter clothing appropriate for the weather
Tip for a photo: The frozen lake Stellisee with the Matterhorn in the background.

Additional information and recommendations are available from the guest information centre on Bahnhofplatz (by the railway station).

  • Plan every mountain tour carefully and adapt to participants’ fitness level as well as the weather and season.
  • Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential, along with adequate supplies of food and water. In uncertain weather, turn back in good time.
  • Inform others of planned route, and whenever possible avoid going alone.
  • Do not leave the marked routes; do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • It is forbidden to walk on the ski pistes.
  • Please be considerate to other walkers and to plants and animals.

Note: In case of avalanche risk, check that the trail is open (information panels at the lift station).
