"Gran Becca": The new course in the World Cup calendar

The first cross-border race in the history of the Ski World Cup will be held on the "Gran Becca" course. The run, which starts on Gobba di Rollin above Zermatt in Switzerland and finishes in Laghi Cime Bianche above Cervinia in Italy, stretches over four kilometres and almost 1,000 metres in altitude. Two Europa Cup races are planned to be held initially in autumn 2022, followed by the World Cup races for the first time in autumn 2023.

Red Bull The Edge – Matterhorn VR at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne

Year after year, thousands of mountaineers fulfil their dream of climbing the Matterhorn. Since 23 June, this summit experience has also been available at the Museum of Transport in Lucerne. Together with Red Bull athlete Jérémie Heitz and Zermatt mountain guide Sam Anthamatten, visitors can virtually climb to the summit of the Matterhorn using VR glasses and a climbing wall.

Zermatt Tourism Office launches new interactive tool for guest advice

A new lamp hangs inconspicuously above a white tabletop in the Zermatt Tourism Office. But this is no ordinary lamp. Developed by Lukas Julen, a young entrepreneur from Zermatt, it projects an interactive surface onto the table with audio playback. The content can be accessed on the surface of the table – even though it is just a standard table, with no technology adjustments. The projection allows guests to call up web-based content for inspiration: whether it's webcams, weather, digital brochures or hiking maps. The "Lamp+" was recently installed in the tourism office and is now available for any visitors to try.

A cross-border project is taking shape to make the vision a reality, involving the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) and Swiss-Ski with the tourist destinations of Zermatt and Cervinia. The first World Cup speed opening in Zermatt/Cervinia could be held as early as autumn 2023.

Together with Swiss yoga teacher Adeline Fossard, the SchlossHotel in Zermatt has developed two new yoga retreats. The weekend or weekly packages include accommodation and other services, with two daily yoga sessions in small groups of up to 10 people. The sessions take place in the hotel's new yoga facility or in the open air, against the backdrop of the Zermatt mountain panorama – with the opportunity to have your picture taken by photographer Fred Vaudroz. The programme also features group hikes and dinners, with additional options on the one-week programme for workshops on improving basic yoga postures or creating an individual training session.
“Meet the Sheep” on the Gornergrat

The famous Zermatt Blacknose sheep spend their summers in the mountain pastures. From July to September, they will also be on the Gornergrat. From 1 July 2021, it’s easy to find the animals, as their neck collars are fitted with a GPS tracker. The package is called “Meet the Sheep.” Guests can track the sheep’s signal on www.gornergrat.ch/sheep, follow the route and meet the sheep in the mountains. The animals are accompanied by the shepherdess Deborah, who provides fascinating information about the sheep breed from the Upper Valais from Tuesday to Sunday between 13:30 and 15:00 hrs. Guided walks to the Blacknose sheep with background information take place every Wednesday and Saturday. Saturdays also include feeding the sheep and an aperitif at the Riffelhaus 1853 on Riffelberg.

Musician Werner Erb is offering new alphorn workshops in the tennis hall of the Alex Hotel in Zermatt from summer 2021.The 1.5-hour courses are aimed at anyone who wants check out this iconic traditional Swiss instrument up close and have a go at playing it. The workshops take place from July to October on eight Fridays and Saturdays. As well as alphorns, wurzelhorns and Büchel (a related instrument resembling a trumpet) are also available to try. With replaceable mouthpieces and disinfectant sprays, all hygiene aspects are covered too.
Zermatt Tourism launches Lucy Walker infopoints

As part of its 2021 summer and autumn campaign "In the footsteps of Lucy Walker", the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination is launching a new cultural initiative. A series of information points will provide historical and cultural information about Lucy Walker via the Matterhorn app in a multimedia format. They will focus on information about famous female mountaineers and historical issues around the role of women in mountain villages, with details of legends and customs related to local women. By launching the infopoints throughout the village in July, Zermatt Tourism is creating a service that can be used 365 days a year, regardless of the availability of village guides.

Zmutt Culture Trail opens

The Zermatt region has more historic buildings than almost any other. The “Alts Zermatt” association hopes to draw attention to these cultural treasures by linking them on a five-stage cultural trail. The first stage from Zermatt to Zmutt has already been open for almost two years. On 19 June 2021, the second stage will be opened - “Zmutt, oldest hamlet in Switzerland”. The name reveals the location for the new route, comprising 14 stopping points and a total of 13 historic houses - the oldest of which dates back to the 13th century. Information boards provide fascinating facts about the history and cultural background of the buildings and the hamlet. This stage also includes an exhibition in a barn. The project is supported by the Zermatt municipality, the Zermatt Civic Community’s cultural and social foundation, the Cantonal Department of Monument Preservation and Zermatt Tourism.

The attractive main building has been constructed in a traditional Valais style. New rooms and terrace at Hotel Hemizeus

In spring 2021, the three-star Hotel Hemizeus is renovating 11 double rooms in the main Zeus building. Rooms will be redesigned in an Alpine style, with underfloor heating, larger bathrooms and new furniture and lighting. The work will be completed over May and June, with the hotel re-opening scheduled for July. The hotel owners will also be adding a terrace to the restaurant with lounge seating and tables where guests can enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. This can also be used in winter. All the rooms and apartments in the other buildings, Hera and Mira, have been renovated over the last few years. The facades of all three buildings have also been renovated. Next year, the remaining ten bedrooms in the Zeus building are scheduled to be renovated, completing the hotel’s refurbishment work.

Silvana Mountain Hotel renovates outdoor area

The Silvana Mountain Hotel is redesigning its outdoor area for the forthcoming summer season. In addition to the lounge area, there’ll be a children’s play area with a climbing wall, swings, treehouse, waterwheel and table tennis, plus a marmot observation post. Around 15 marmots live within 20 metres of the hotel. There will still be a bike chalet for guests where they can charge, wash and repair their e-bikes. The hotel also has e-mountain bikes and kickbikes for hire. The redesign of the outdoor area is the last stage in the full renovation of the hotel with new bedrooms, a new spa and a new restaurant.

The lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic is causing a great deal of uncertainty and reduced sales for almost every industry in Switzerland. Instead of falling into a state of shock, the Zermatt Bergbahnen AG (ZBAG) concentrates on the time “when this is all over”. Despite the difficult starting position, the Board of Directors has decided to make the major investments of around 60 million Swiss francs over the next two years as planned. The additional financing provided by the banks also contributes to this decision. As soon as the weather conditions allow and no further official decisions relating to the coronavirus prevent construction work from taking place, ZBAG will commence the task of building the new Kumme gondola lift and continue work on the Matterhorn glacier ride II 3S cableway project.

Europa Trail Hut reopens under new name

At the end of November 2019, ‘Zermatt Selection’ will open its doors. The shop at Bahnhofstrasse 7b will be run by Zermatt artist Heinz Julen and will also include an exhibition that can be accessed even when the shop is closed. Works of art will be displayed behind glass and can also be seen at the ‘Kunsträume Zermatt’ art gallery, helping the artists to display their work in prominent locations. The main exhibition is still open in the Vernissage. In the Bahnhofstrasse exhibition, products will include chairs and tables from Heinz Julen Design, accessories from Restaurant Chez Vrony and exhibition pieces from other artists. The shop will be open all day, 365 days a year, and will sell pictures, lamps and clothing items designed by Heinz Julen. His aim is to provide high-quality products with a link to Zermatt – beautiful souvenirs with a genuine Zermatt history. The building will also be a cultural meeting point. The shop will replace the current Heinz Julen shop on Hofmattstrasse.

This winter, the Zermatt Matterhorn Brauerei will open its new event and tasting room, where guests can try a wide variety of beers from around the world. Over the summer months in 2019, a new viewing platform has been built, offering more space so that guests and traffic can pass each other more easily. New painting atelier in Täsch

Owner Fränzi Tscherrig will run painting courses for children and adults, where you can learn about the creative techniques behind abstract painting. Thanks to a highly successful summer in 2018 and an optimum 2018/19 winter season, the record sales of the previous year increased by a further 9.3% to reach CHF 76 million in the 2018/19 financial year, with EBITDA at CHF 39.6 million (up 14.4% year on year at 52% of sales) and operational cash flow at CHF 35.6 million (46.8% of sales, up 16% on the previous year). Benchmarked against the most important indicators, Zermatt Bergbahnen ranks among the very best performers in the whole sector.

In autumn 2019, the Parkhotel Beau Site will be extensively renovating and updating its reception area, lobby, bar and restaurants. The opening of the world’s highest 3S cableway to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in the autumn of 2018 was just the first stage in the realization of a much more far-reaching vision: the creation of a continuous cableway connection between Zermatt and Italy – the so-called "Alpine Crossing". This crossing will be made possible by the addition of another structurally similar 3S cableway (tri-cable gondola lift) between Testa Grigia and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. The first visitors should be able to make the highest crossing of the Alps in summer 2022.

In December 2019 the "Zer Mama Bistro", which will welcome hungry and thirsty guests from 07:00 to 22:00, will open on the ground floor of the new Hotel Mama. The Zer Mama Bistro offers “glocal food”, in other words global specialities from local produce. A generous brunch will be available in the morning, coffee and snacks will be on the menu throughout the day, and dinner will be served in the evening. On 1 December 2019, the Hotel Elite, which was constructed in 1962, will reopen after comprehensive renovations to the rooms, restaurant, reception, wellness area and garden terrace. Local materials have been used as much as possible during the work. The 3-star hotel’s five floors have been renamed with the names of stops on the Gornergrat Bahn because the hotel’s founder previously worked for the railway.

New Aparthotel Naco

In December 2019, a new hotel will be opening its doors at Spissstrasse 44 in Zermatt, to be known as "Naco Aparthotel, by Arca". It will offer a rooftop suite, two junior rooftop suites, eight two-room apartments and 17 studios. The aparthotel is owned by the Hotel and Solebad Arca, which is immediately adjacent. Guests can also use the Hotel und Solebad Arca’s spa, with saline spa, sauna and steam bath. This spa area will be expanded by the start of the winter.
Cervo: summer 2020 construction work

Down the toboggan run on a Snooc

From 19 December 2019, for the first time it will be possible to toboggan down the Alps’ highest toboggan run - from Rotenboden to Riffelberg - on a Snooc. The Snooc is the latest generation of toboggan, where you sit on one ski. The product has a lightweight construction and is easy to use. The ski on the snow ensures a good grip and the seat guarantees a comfortable position. Take the Gornergrat railway from Zermatt to Rotenboden, where the thrilling 1.5 km descent to Rifffelberg starts. Snoocs can be hired from Rotenboden station, in the same way as a conventional toboggan.

New treasure hunt in Randa

There is a new treasure hunt through the idyllic mountain village; it is about four kilometres long and takes around one-and-a-half hours. Clues on the treasure map help you to find the answers. New spa at the Silvana Mountain Hotel

The Silvana Mountain Hotel will be refurbishing its spa area between September and December 2019. In addition to the existing spa pool, three different saunas, multi-sensory showers, two relaxation rooms, a lounge and a massage room are being developed in several little chalets on a 200-square-metre site. It is all being constructed with natural stone tiles and mature wood, to create an Alpine atmosphere. Following the refurbishment, the hotel will be able to claim proudly to be the closest spa to the Matterhorn. The Silvana Mountain Spa will be accessible to the public, by request, from 5 December 2019.

Widening of Kirchbrücke

The Kirchbrücke is the perfect place from which to take a photo of the Matterhorn. This viewing point is now being widened to make it easier for guests and traffic to accommodate each other. A lift will also be installed in addition to the stairs. The new, wider bridge is scheduled to open on 7 September 2019. Due to the construction work, the photo point will not be accessible during summer 2019. There are alternative viewing points on the community centre terrace, on Riedweg and at Zen Stecken.
New destination app

In December 2018, Zermatt Tourismus and Zermatt Bergbahnen AG launched the Matterhorn app, with a wide range of features. These include a news feed, webcams, an events calendar, a live piste map, weather info and a ticket shop with a 5% discount on all tickets for guests. There is also a map with a filter function showing the closest restaurants, shops and other facilities. Other functions such as online restaurant reservations in the destination are being planned.

Second treasure hunt

In summer 2019, Zermatt – Matterhorn will offer visitors a second treasure hunt in the village. This is aimed at families with children over 5 years old. A treasure map will lead children to eight stations where they answer questions. An example of one of the questions: "You are currently standing on a bridge. What is it made of?" The answers will give children a code that they can use to open the lock on the treasure chest in the tourism office. The route is 6 km long and takes approx. 2 hours. The other treasure hunt in the destination ("Wolli’s Treasure Hunt") will continue.
Eight new bike trails

The biking paradise of Zermatt has lots of news to announce, including eight new bike trails to add to the existing thirteen, some of which have also been changed slightly. This means bikers can now indulge their cycling passion on 220 km of trails, which have new signposts at the trail intersections (e.g. Riffelalp). From summer 2019, the 21 bike trails will be divided into the following three categories: Flow trails (2), Enduro routes (6) and tour routes (13). The difference is that flow trails and Enduro routes go mainly downhill, unlike tour routes. Enduro routes are also natural, whereas flow trails are man-made.
New photo scavenger hunt

There will be a new photo scavenger hunt in summer 2019. If you would like to take part, you can register online. You will see ten different images on your smartphone, in the wrong order. During the hike you need to find and sort the objects in the images. There are two routes: one goes along the Matterhorn Trail from Schwarzsee to Zermatt, the other goes from Sunnegga via Findeln to Zermatt. If you succeed in putting the images into the correct order, you will receive a winner’s certificate and automatically be entered into the main prize draw.
New bike trail in Täsch

From summer 2019, Täsch will have a new bike trail. The newly marked trail starts from the village of Täsch and leads along the banks of the Matter Vispa around the Schalisee. The Schalisee is the perfect place to relax; guests can cool off in the lake or enjoy a refreshing drink from the snack bar. The route back takes you through the old village centre of Täsch where you can see typical Valais barns and granges. Length: 4.3 km, ascent and descent: 48 m.

A new Raclette Evening is also being launched on Tuesdays at Cervo Puro from the end of June until mid July and from mid August until mid October – with only raclette on the menu!

Tradition Julen has new apartments and studios available to rent. The “Downtown” apartment, which sleeps four to seven people, is available to book now. Located at Getwingstrasse 12 in the heart of Zermatt, it has accommodation on three floors, all with lift access. The balcony offers views of the Matterhorn. Free use of the spa facilities in the Romantik Hotel Julen and Hotel Alpenhof is included in the price. Breakfast, half board and daily cleaning options can also be added on request.
Fuchs bakery acquires Biner’s bakehouse

As of 30 April 2019, Bäckerei Pius Fuchs AG will take over the production and some of the staff of Bäckerei Biner, which is closing as a new manager could not be found. However, customers won't need to go without their favourite Biner products, as the Fuchs range will be expanded to include some Bäckerei Biner specialities. The acquisition benefits both parties; Bäckerei Biner couldn't find a new manager and Bäckerei Fuchs was looking for a larger bakehouse.
365 days on the Klein Matterhorn

Since the new Matterhorn glacier ride (the highest 3S cable car in the world) was opened in autumn 2018, the peak of the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is even more accessible. The Klein Matterhorn can now be reached 365 days a year. When the Matterhorn glacier ride is being serviced (3-19 June 2019), the aerial tramway will be in operation.
Hotel Hemizeus: renovations

From 30 June 2019, the Hotel Hemizeus will be renovating one of their apartments and several of the bedrooms. Out of the 32 rooms, 8 will undergo a complete redesign, and two bedrooms will be combined to create a suite. Out of the 9 apartments, 1 will be renovated, plus a new bathroom will be fitted.
Kinhütte: new packages

In time for the season opening on 28 June 2019, the Kinhütte has announced a wide range of new packages. These include guided Kin Glacier hikes where you can see wild Alpine goats, voluntary work such as chopping wood, drying crockery and baking cakes, yoga and a relaxation programme with a massage. At 2,584 metres above sea level and surrounded by four-thousanders in the Mischabel group, the hut prioritises sustainability and takes waste reduction, food recycling and the use of local products very seriously. Eating together round a table provides companionship and sociable conversation for sole travellers.

Hotel Admiral becomes Hotel Mama

Hotel Admiral will remain open until 30 April 2019. After that, it will be fully renovated both inside and out. The hotel will re-open for the 2019/2020 winter season under the new name of Hotel Mama, with 29 rooms (four more than before). It will continue to be a three-star superior hotel and will be managed by JuMA Ho-tel AG. Hotel Mama will also have a co-working space managed together with PuraWorka.
Hotel Beau Site: New director

Roman Codina is the new director of the Parkhotel Beau Site. Originally from Schaffhausen, he has many years of hotel management experience from working in a wide range of hotels. Codina replaces Franz Schwegler-Dossetto, who has been the director of Beau Site for 24 years. A series of building renovations, refurbishments and alterations were carried out under his leadership. He is now retiring.
SAC Monte Rosa Hut: new management

The continuation of the SAC Monte Rosa Hut has been secured. The Rubin family had to stop managing the hut for health reasons, but Richard Lehner (Zermatt mountain guide) and Kilian Emmenegger (Zermatt ski instructor) have been confirmed as the new managers. They both bring a wealth of experience with them, as they used to manage the Gandegghütte. They will start their new role in summer 2019.
Cervo launches pop-up bakery

The Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort is opening a pop-up bakery in mid-June, near Zermatt railway station in the former Biner bakery store. Alongside fresh bread, it will also sell pastries and home-made sandwiches, plus a selection of Cervo souvenirs. Guests can also check in to the Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort in the pop-up bakery. The store will be renovated in autumn and a new concept launched for the 2019/2020 winter season.

Zermatt has never had as many Michelin stars as it does in 2019; the Matterhorn village now has five stars, two more than last year. The Omnia and the Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni have both been awarded one star. The After Seven retained its two stars and the Ristorante Capri still has one star.
New restaurant: L'Atelier Grandsire

The new L’Atelier Grandsire restaurant opened in December 2018. Guests have been enjoying lunchtime and evening meals in a cosy French atmosphere. The restaurant also offers home-made patisseries and a wine store on the lower-ground floor. Janine Tschümperlin and Yannik Robert Jacques Grandsire are the people behind this new res-taurant. Grandsire previously worked as a patissier in Hotel Mirabeau and is originally from France. His partner is Swiss and they run the restaurant together.
Matterhorn Ultraks – new race

The Matterhorn Ultraks mountain races have taken place every year in Zermatt since 2013 and offer a new category for 2019 – the Extreme Race. It is one of four Supersky races in the 2019 Migu Skyrunner World Series, with 25 per cent of the race at more than 3,000 metres above sea level. Its Supersky status means that participants who finish the race in Zermatt will receive twice as many points, enabling them to climb up the overall rankings. The Matterhorn Ultraks will therefore attract the attention of the world’s best trail run-ners. The race will take place on 23 and 24 August 2019.
Traillove Derby

It's time for something new: the Traillove Derby introduces a new format into the festival, offering participants a fun, imaginative way to experience all the biking excitement the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination has to offer. The Traillove Derby will take place from 18-20 September 2019. Over three days, 50 two-person teams will take on various challenges, learning about the best trails and the hidden corners at the foot of the Matterhorn. There will also be Zermatt cuisine, a lively evening pro-gramme and plenty of chance to socialise. Thanks to the all-inclusive package, the Derby teams can focus all their attention on biking.

It’s time for the third act of the Zermatt Open Air Theatre, which in 2019 will present "MATTERHORN: NO LA-DIES PLEASE!" After the success of "The Matterhorn Story" in 2015 and "Romeo und Julia am Gornergrat" in 2017, the open-air theatre is returning to the Riffelberg. The première of "MATTERHORN: NO LADIES PLEASE!" will tell the story of Lucy Walker, a member of the British aristocracy who was the first woman to climb the Matterhorn. The writer Livia Anne Richard wrote and will once again direct the play, and live music will be provided by the Swiss Alpine horn player, Eliana Burki. Performances will take place from Thursdays to Sundays between 11 July 2019 and 1 September 2019.
European mountain running chamionships

The European Athletics Association has chosen Zermatt to host the 2019 European Mountain Running Championships. The European Mountain Running race up the Riffelberg takes place on Sunday 7 July 2019 and is only open to runners selected by their associations. The race which is open to the public, the Gornergrat Zermatt Marathon, takes place as usual the day before, on 6 July 2019.
Shepherd's festival and wolli's birthday

The Shepherd’s Festival will take place on Sunday 8 September 2019 in the Matterhorn arena in Zen Stecken (at the south-western end of Zermatt). The highlight of the festival will be the prize-giving for the best Blacknose sheep. There will also be celebrations for the destination mascot Wolli’s birthday, with cakes and games for chil-dren, plus festival food and drink and traditional Swiss folk music. Entry is free.

Four women, who shared their motivation in a video, are ready for this challenge. They qualified for the "Matterhorn: Ladies Please!" project and will show the world via their social media channels what it is like to climb the Matterhorn. The winning applicants: Judith Wernli, radio presenter Anne-Sophie Thilo, former professional yachtswoman Sue Hirschi, nurse Steffi Hunziker, web and multimedia publisher The women will undergo intensive training in Zermatt from 11-18 July 2019 before climbing the Matterhorn on 19 July 2019. The InfoCube on Trockener Steg, which has been documenting the Matterhorn glacier ride construction work, has now been updated. From the end of summer 2019, it will display information on the forthcoming Alpine Crossing project. Alpine Crossing will make it possible to cross the Alps by cable car (from Cervinia via Klein Matterhorn to Zermatt). The artist Branko Šmon is on a mission to raise awareness of the worldwide production of plastics and its effects on the environment. He is portraying the global plastic stock of seven billion tonnes in comparison to the volume of the Matterhorn. If the worldwide plastic stock existed in granulate form, it would have a volume of 14 km3. Using frames set up by the artist at various vantage points in Zermatt, he will show how much of the Matterhorn could be filled with granulate, visualising the spatial dimensions of the plastic stock for the observer. The project will be launched with an event on 19 July 2019. Swiss pioneer Bertrand Piccard, who circumnavigated the world in a solar plane from 2015 to 2016, has taken over the sponsorship of "Earth Plastic View".

The catering service of the Glacier Express, Panoramic Gourmet AG, is launching a new culinary concept in the spring of 2019. This consists of various regional delicacies such as: an Alpine platter (Älplerteller) with Salzis (dry cured sausage) and Graubünden mountain cheese, traditional Valais rarebit soaked in white wine, oven-baked Graubünden capuns (chard roulades) with a little cheese on top, or, one of the classics, mince with macaroni and apple sauce. The offer is rounded off with regional wines. The aim is for guests to experience the culinary diversity of the regions they travel through on their plates.
