Zermatt: Marvellous new hiking books

19/05/2014

That Zermatt is always exciting is a common theme in the books written about it. New publications include two hiking guides and a book on development aid in Nepal which was written in collaboration with Zermatt‘s Alpine Rescue Center.

Aside from sitting at his desk, the local author Ernesto Perren likes hiking. In his re-issued booklet entitled “Wanderführer Zermatt” (Zermatt hiking guide), he describes the most beautiful hikes around Zermatt, from the simple tour around the village to challenging mountain hikes. The booklet is a must for all regular Zermatt guests. Presenting over 70 hikes and tours in and around Zermatt, Täsch and Randa, the guide attests to the author’s thorough knowledge and love of the village and its hiking areas.

“Höhenwege im Wallis” (Panoramic Mountain Hiking in Valais)

In conjunction with Gerhard and Rose Marie Bleyer, the Alpinism journalist and mountaineer Caroline Fink has re-issued this compact hiking book with 36 tours through the most beautiful hiking and mountain hiking regions in Valais. Among the 36 tours are a few in the Zermatt environs: Alphubel; Höhbalmen round tour; from Zermatt to Gornergrat, new Monte Rosa Cabin, Monte Rosa, Breithorn, Dom. A work for hikers who also aim high.

“Bung” – mountain rescue and art

A new publication is the art book “Bung” with portrays by the photographer Rob Lewis and texts by Rolf Loepfe. In December 2013, various organisations joined forces with the Alpine Rescue Foundation, Zermatt, to set up a Health Camp in Nepal. The aim of the project was to provide medical care to the population of the Bung area, some of who live in relative poverty. In the two days of the project, over 700 people came to the Camp for treatment. An improvised photo studio took 60 picture and text portraits.
