Bronze Alphorn

A huge alphorn made of bronze stands on the stairs of the Gemeindehaus in Zermatt. It is pointed directly at the Matterhorn, which can be seen in the background, and has surprising artistic elements.

The bronze alphorn was created by the Italian artists Paolo Albertelli and Mariagrazia Abbaldo from Torino. “The Alphorn” shows larch branches also created from bronze on which seven figures climb upwards. They are a reference the artist makes to the seven first ascenders, who were the first to stand atop the summit of the Matterhorn in 1865. The alphorn in installed on the stairs of the parish hall as part of the 150 Years First Ascent of the Matterhorn celebrations in July 2015.

So that the Matterhorn can also be comfortably admired from the centre of the village. The authorities of the village have made the terrace of the Gemeindehaus accessible to the general public. There are large benches arranged on the terrace where people may linger and marvel.
